Summary: A must-have for anyone grappling with theory
Review: A group of 170 scholars from around the world and a multiplicity of departments (religion, philosophy, sociology, psychology, linguistics, ...) has come together to produce this three-part volume. Part 1 covers the various schools of thought, Part 2 individual theorists, and Part 3 the vocabulary of literary theory. Each entry is a mini-essay, complete with a listing of primary and secondary sources, and extensive cross-referencing to other entries throughout the work. This book provides an excellent way to get quick--but thorough--answers. It's also a great starting point for more directed study. The lit crit shelf isn't complete without it, right next to Abrams' Glossary of Literary Terms.

Summary: A Great Encyclopedia on Theory/Culture
Review: I have ever read an article by a Japanese professor of English literature saying 'what is called "cultural studies" is beginning to break the old-fashioned study of literature. This is a good reference book for such a trend." Part 1: Approaches, Part 2: Scholars, Part 3: Terms. Part 1 consists of 'Archetypal criticism' to 'Theory and pedagogy', Part 2 'M.H.Abrams' to 'Aleksander K. Zholkovskii', and Part 3 'Actant' to 'White mythology'. The writing is excellent enough to read through.
