Summary: Unleashed my Baggage
Review: A wonderful book indeed! Through the comprehensive history of black hair, I was finally able to let go of the stress that (for my entire life) I associated with my own hair. It definitely "untangled my roots"!! I was most captivated and inspired by the fact that black hair has fascinated the world for centuries! Hair Story is undoubtedly a book for the black community, it has the ability to give us insight so that we may be able to regain the social, political and economic strength of our ancestors.

Summary: Impressive historical account
Review: As with the first review I read here, this book was indeed enlightening as well as entertaining. I would also like to add comforting because it includes so many tidbits reminiscent of my own experiences with hair as a woman of African descent. At times it also felt like I was talking to a wise elder. I learned a lot of history would highly recommend this book to those women who have internalized the negative messages all around us concerning our natural hair.

Summary: Must have for any complete Black Book Collection
Review: Do you know why the heads of new african slaves were shaved upon landing on American soil? Do you know about the proud tradition of African braiding and the unique cultural meanings of different styles of braids? Do you know the true reasons for why black hair was originally straightened? If you can't answer these questions you need this book. Excellent source- stocked full of the most thorough and complete history of black hair- from origins, politics, media, and beyond. Great book to share with young and old for a new perspective of our natural, kinky, afro, weaved, permed, fried, lyed, and jherri curled hair.

Summary: Hair Story
Review: I found this book to very informative. I learned details about history and our hair as well as the economics connected to it. Actually, i was distrubed by somethings I was totally unaware of (i.e. The FTC's involvement w/ an attempt at limiting sales of relaxers ! made by a black company)

As someone who has locks it was a book that caused many emotions from saddest, embarassment, shame to acceptance, validation and understanding.

Summary: Great history
Review: I loved this book because it gave great insight as to why black women relax their hair. The history of our hair from Africa to slavery to emancipation to the civil rights movement to today. It is amazing how important our hair is to us. This book will change the way you see your own hair forever.

Summary: It's about time!!
Review: I loved this book! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I wanted MORE information about the subject. It's nice to finally find a book that actually focuses on the history and politics involved with our (Afrikan) hair. We seem to overlook why we do certain things with our hair and it's nice to find a book that begins to look at those things. Hopefully the book will help to enlighten others. I consider myself to be someone who knows EVERYTHING about Black hair and I learned many new things from this book that I was not aware of. Also, it's not a long book; you can breeze through it in a day or two.

Summary: informative and educational, but not a hair guide.
Review: This book doesn't explain about the maintenance or management difficulties of African hair. Or how time consuming it is...
This book is not a hair guide.
Neither does it affirm or philosophise about afro/curly hair.

Hair story is an informative and educational book especially if you are researching on the history of African coyly hair in America or just to clarify how black hair fashion is influenced by America, then this is the book. The authors have spent a lot of time researching this subject and it shows.
Of course I am assuming that this book will not be your sole source for research!!!

Trust me!!! As I am an African born British bred black woman who is experientially and intellectually well versed in this matter too!!!
It is worth reading.
