Rating: Summary: Funny, informative. Review: Good fun book! Lots and lots of information on makeup history, written as a sort of love letter to what the author calls the world's favorite cosmetic. Since my mother loves lipstick so much, she reallly really loved this book.
Rating: Summary: A fun, fascinating read for everyone! Review: I never knew lipstick had such a fascinating history and, what's more, that I would ever be so fascinated by it! This book is truly a fun, easy read. I found myself thinking, as I was reading, "Wow, I had no idea! What else???" and turning page after page to find out. And the style that the author writes in is so open and friendly, I felt as if she were one of my girlfriends, chatting on the phone about makeup! I have to say, I really enjoyed this book, and I think everyone who wears makeup -- or is simply a history buff! -- would as well. Plus, it's a perfect gift for a girl of any age (I picked one up for my mom, too!). I'm recommending it to all my friends!
Rating: Summary: A fun look at the one cosmetic I can't do without. Review: I thought this book was insightful, full of facts and wisdom. It's written well and contains everything you ever wanted to know and more. There are tons of quotes from famous make up artists and tips for creating your own colors. And my favorite - a look at the shapes of our lipstick and what it says about us. I loved the wittiness of it.On a separate note. The previous reviewer was questioning the author's credibility since she wasn't wearing any lipstick in her photograph. The photo is in black and white and perhaps the color (especially if it was a light one) she was wearing didn't come out. This is trivial. The review should be about the content of the book.
Rating: Summary: Valentines Day Favorite!!! Review: I was really surprised at how witty and informative this book was. I just loved reading about the evolution of makeup through the ages. I am so glad we have it so easy. Our toughest choices are to decide what brand of lipstick to buy and what color to wear. Just thinking about those poor women in the middle ages that used everything from pig brain and wolf blood as skincare potions. If I had to crush ant eggs as kohl for eyeliner like the Egyptians did, I'd just wear a paper bag over my head. The history lesson isn't the only interesting part of this book. There is also the section on "Lipstick Freud," which tries to analyze what your lipstick says about you. Who would have thought lipstick would be so deep? The section about dealing with pushy and "evil" makeup salespeople is definitely a valuable tool. I can't count how many times I was bullied into buying a cosmetic that I wasn't quite sure about. If you love lipstick, get this book. If you love a good history lesson, get this book. In other words, it is worth the money. I am glad I took the chance!
Rating: Summary: A really fun and informative read Review: I'm a big fan of lipstick, and couldn't resist this book -- especially with it's great looking and stylish cover. I loved it. Unlike other books on the subject this one had it all. A history of the cosmetic, tips on how to wear it, what your choices in color, etc. say about you, quotes from famous people about their feelings on the subject. It's entertaining, yet really substantive. (Especially fun were the sections on what your lipstick says about you, and the lipstick trivia.) I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: You don't have to love lipstick to love this book! Review: Jessica Pallingston writes a witty and informative book on lipstick. She is unapologetic about her love affair and addiction to the stuff, and leaves out no detail, regardless how un-ladylike or un-P.C. it may have (Roman makeup slaves, how horrible!) Her lighthearted approach is refreshing, and her sense of humor shines throughout. I am a woman who has never worn lipstick and never really liked it. Rather than addicted to lipstick, I am addicted to little intersting facts and factoids. This book sated my desire to cram my head with crazy information about a piece of this culture I am a part of. Whatever Ms. Pallingston writes next, I await it eagerly!
Rating: Summary: A sweet, funny adventure into a fascinating tube of wax. Review: LIPSTICK is a charming little book that will make you smile on a rainy day. Reading this attractively packaged book is like talking to an eccentric friend with an encyclopedic mind. In fact, the deeper Jessica Pallingston delves into her "simple" subject matter, the more significant, strange and entertaining her journey becomes. It was fun to go along with her - a promising new talent!
Rating: Summary: My friend Sarah has this book. Review: My friend Sarah got this book as a gift from her Aunt Wendy, who also likes to send books about serial killers, and pictures of other people's dead cats. I flipped through it when I was staying at her house in Baltimore a few month's ago. I really like Baltimore. The book seemed good, but not as good as the one Aunt Wendy sent about vampires.
