Summary: Good Old Fashioned Advice
Review: Even though some of the wisdom in this book is out of date (like washing hair once a week), there is still plenty of great advice. I loved reading this and have even put some of the advice to work (with great results). If you want to learn how to be a lady of class and charm this is a must read! Not only will you learn a lot, you will laugh at the authors' subtle wit. Definately a great book!

Summary: Vintage Gem
Review: I loved this book. Yes, it may contain things that most would consider common sense. However, judging by the way many women act and dress today, this book is a gentle reminder of what being a "woman" is all about. It makes feminintiy fun again!!

I liked the advice on planning your wardrobe and the example they gave of a rich woman with plenty of expensive clothes but she didn't know how to "wear" them vs. the less than rich woman with inexpensive but well tailored clothes, who looked great. It's all about planning your purchases to expand your wardrobe and making the most of it, not how many clothes you have or how much they cost.

There are other cute little tidbits that make you think twice about your behaviour: such as...do you talk to loud? The art of "small talk/chit chat", what to tell and what not to tell. The importance of consideration, loyalty, sweetness and sympathy.

I'd strongly suggest adding this book to your etiquette book collection.

Summary: Re Glib and Insulting
Review: I think this book benefits already fashionable and charming people, rather than people who are in dire need of fashion or charm techniques. This book puts common sense and style together, which magazines and designers have yet figured out to do. I try to read the book every season, before shopping, in order to wash out all the nonsensical things magazines and designers like to tell you. Like 800 ways to make a Man Look at You!! OR Clothes, that make you stop Eating!!

This book makes you take a step back and re-evaluate your style choices. The best fashion book. Test of Time.

Summary: Real Charm Never Goes Out of Style
Review: The first half of this book is absolutely antiquated in its beauty and fashion tips, but these are the shallower aspects of charm and are expected to be more or less ephemeral. If you pay attention to the title, Better Than Beauty: A Guide to Charm, it's clear that the authors did not set out to be the once and forever final word on beauty and fashion. Also, if you can get past the advice that changing one's undies every other day is acceptable, you'll still find a lot of timeless advice on how to choose clothes, makeup and hairstyles that flatter you.

You'll find real wisdom in Part 2 of this book, however. This is the portion of the Guide to Charm that speaks to the aspects of culture that transcend clothing, makeup and hair styles. This is where you're going to find advice on how to ACT to get along better. The authors highlight the importance of putting yourself in the place of the people you interact with: treat them the way you want to be treated. Sound familiar? Some of you will still find this advice dated, and that's fine. This book is not for you then. But for those of you who know you can get contemporary fashion and beauty advice elsewhere, but want a friendly reminder on how to be charming on the inside, not artificial, pick up this book and go straight to Part 2. You'll find that real charm never goes out of style.

Summary: Re Glib and Insulting
Review: This book was first published in 1938!!!!!!! The fact that it contains some outdated notions about body image and fashion should come as no surprise.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A fun read
Review: This book was fun to read. Although the information WAS outdated, i get a kick out of reading things from the 30's, 40's and 50's. It's refreshing to learn of how people thought and acted then. You wont learn anything new, but it does make you more aware of your attitude and it was a book I didnt want to put down.

Summary: Great book
Review: This book was originally published in 1938 and then again in 2002, but 90%-95% of this book's knowledge can still be applied today, proving that class never goes out of style. It is a fun read that reminds you of this fact with nice real life examples. You can obviously tell when some info may not apply. But most of the info is basic manner/etiquette type stuff.

Summary: Wisdom from the past
Review: This book was written in 1938 and republished in 2002. Much to my surprise, it is not at all outdated (setting aside a few old fashion hygiene tips). It's has a smooth layout and is very well written to keeps ones interest, not all drawn out with rules. It's the next best thing to Grandma's advice of yesteryear for today. An excellent choice book for any young lady.
