Summary: Written to match the exam.
Review: Everyone is dead right - Too long. If you know TCP/IP skip chapter 2, IIS skip Chapter 5. Any clue about troubleshooting skim the last few chapters. I found that the questions and examples are extreamly close the the actual exam. I wonder how many times the authors had to take it to get so close!

When taking this one, I did exactly what I stated above, review the questions, followed up on those which were weak points. Installed the demo version of proxy on my home system and boom i scored 1000! I can't fault a book that was able to give me all that. Ok, so you skip the first 100 or so pages, get to the intresting stuff, miss 10-15% with poor study habits and minimal playing and you still pass.

I was originally using the Cram version of this book, however, it was too shy on pictures. This book has so many picutres, even If you don't have a computer, you would still be able to pass with this one.

Also, be sure to check Sybex's web page for the ERRATA - The TCP/IP sections (Chapter 2) appears to have a few minor typos - No biggies :)

Summary: Finaly a proxy book worth reading!
Review: I must have spent half a day in the book store before finally choosing this one. It was extremely thorough and the only study guide I needed to pass the Proxy exam. If your looking for a proxy book, look no further.

Summary: Worst Sybex book I've ever encountered
Review: I purchased this book based on the reviews.... The book wasnot easy to follow and the author spent more time telling you that thetopics would be covered in a later chapter - Never mind the fact thatthe topics were never thouroughly explained. I feel that this bookwas very diorganzied and did not present the material in such a wayfor individuals to understand it. If you are using just this book tostudy for the exam, I highly reccommend that you use other materialsto supplement this book. END

Summary: Too much useless information
Review: If you are using this as a study guide, go elsewhere. Its close to 600 pages, only about 170-220 should have been used to cover what is on the Proxy Exam. I finally decided to use something besides the Exam Cram books, and do I ever regret it. The author even states at one point, "you might be asking why you need to know this". I agree that knowledge is power but save the extra 400 pages for another book about proxy. It is definately a poor study guide. You get so bored with the mounds of useless info that you are a zombie by the time he gets to the good stuff. s

Summary: It has some faults.....
Review: The book is pretty darn long. It doesn't measure up to the quality that Sybex has shown in the past. I didn't like the references to chapters that haven't been read yet. The practice questions at the end of each chapter is more suited to a group discussion rather than solo studying. Many typos (how many tries does it take to get SMTP or SNMP---geez).

I've worked with Proxy for about 2 years and had a working knowledge going in. I read the book through twice (I do this for all certs). First time, the book didn't make a lot of sense and I felt ill-prepared. Read it a second time and everything meshed. The book has a lot of very good technical information. It is just _very_ poorly organized, making anything short of reading cover-to-cover a waste of time.

I hope Sybex releases a new edition that is better written and organized that will compare more favorably with other Study Guides.

I passed the exam with a 955. I am an MCSE, MCP+I, CNA 3.x/4.x. Overall, I guess the book was worth it in the end.

Summary: Good book to use for a study guide!
Review: The book was a good book overall. The TCP/IP chapter was a good chapter for review of TCP/IP. I found that the troubleshooting chapter and the Installation chapter were very useful.

Summary: Good Book, but it could be better
Review: This book is quite good, but I believe the size of the book is a bit large and I agree with some of the other reviewers of Amazon about the 600 page size. I think that if you read this book and obtain a copy of the new Proxy Server 2 Test Success and Exam Notes Proxy Server 2 book and read those two books along with this Study Guide, then the material isn't as bad in understanding the subject. Otherwise, the material in this book was practically "greek" to me at first until I started reviewing my Exam Notes for Proxy Server 2 and doing the exercises in Test Success Proxy Server 2 book will help you out more. It did for me. Using all 3 books, Study Guide, Test Success, and Exam Notes for a given MCSE exam subject will help prepare you. If money is an issue and you want only 1 book to prepare for the exam. You may be asking for a hard time passing the exam unless you have practical experience in networking. Experience is a key element to passing any of the these networking certification exams.

Summary: Piece of Cake
Review: This book was long - in part because it covered a lot of NT information that you should know by the time you're taking an elective exam. For this test, I actually perfered the Exam Cram study guide because it clearly defined the three components of Proxy Server and then expanded on all three and how they fit together, where as this book seemed to devote huge chapters to each component leaving the reader to figure out how everything worked together.

Also, some of the sample questions at the end of the chapter were not sample 'exam' questions - they were essay/short answer.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Enough to pass the exam, but has too much "water"
Review: You will get enough knowledge from this book to pass the exam, but authors could cut a couple of chapters in half without thinking twice.
