Rating: Summary: This is the book you need for the LPI 101/102 exam Review: Having spent a good deal of time looking for the book that would help me pass the exam, I think I just found it! I have purchased many books on the subject of Linux, but none that really fits the bill with regard to taking the exam. I am a Novell CNI who is really going to have get to grips with Linux now that Novell has SuSE in its portfolio. This book isn't just for exam takers, its great to get to know linux for the novice. Plenty of good real world tips, exam questions, and an exam simulator. Many technical books are just right to put you to sleep of an evening, I found it very readable, well structured, without having to religously follow the chapter sequence. My advice is to buy it if you are serious about the LPI qualification!
Rating: Summary: Notes from one of the technical editors Review: I was one of the technical editors of the project. A lot of work went into making sure that all the material was accurate and relevent to the exam.
Ross' writing style is also great for the reader. I enjoyed reading the book because he made the topic interesting. It isn't a dry technical manual, it's the essense of his classes boiled down into book form.
This is THE book to get if you are going for your LPI, both for experienced Linux people looking to make sure they hit all the points, and newcomers who need guidance.
Rating: Summary: Good book, bad testing software Review: Just passed LPI 101 today with many thanks to Mr. Brunson's book. I have been studying a couple hours each day for about 3 weeks, I have to say that this book was a great help to passing the test. However.... yes i "rtfm" about installing the included test software on linux, I also downloaded the newer version from the exam cram site. The application starts but it cannot load any of the tests. I had to break down and use the windoze version, and even that version would only ask me the same 30 questions, it would not change the test questions.
Even though I think this is a very good book for studying for the LPI exam I would also recommend 2 other books that I used along with this one to be ready for any thing on the 101 test: Linux: System Administration from sybex and Linux in a nutshell from O'Reilly.
Rating: Summary: A Cram for the Test, and a Simulated Test Review: Part of the 'growing up' of software is the certification process. Anyone can claim to be an expert on any software package. To provide some standardization of such claimes, the certification process was developed. Now you can get certified on nearly any software package. And Linux is no exception.
Perhaps the best known (non-version specific) Linux certification is the one from Linux Professional Institure Certification or LPIC. It's also probably the most difficult. It's a test you take on a computer, so you can get your score just after you walk out of the testing room.
This book is specifically oriented to the test. It is only incidentally about Linux. It is not a guide on how to install Linux or use it, it's a guide on passing the test. It's part of the Exam Cram series and makes no bones about it's purpose being to pass the tests. Both the LPIC 101 and 102 tests are covered. A CD-ROM is included that has a simulation of the actual exams. Like the exams, the simulation has about 300 questions, and 45 of these are selected each time you take the test. As a result you will get different questions each time you go through it.
As a final incentive, purchasers of this book are given a code to get a 20% discount off of the price of the test.
Rating: Summary: Great Book but CD doesn't work on Linux Review: The book is great, but the CD is missing the file examsim.setup
without this very important file the installation just doesn't work :-( . I haven't tried the cd with Windows because I don't use Windows, but the book is really great even if you can't use the cd. Hopefully by the time I finish studying the book the missing file might be available for download somewhere.
Rating: Summary: Correction to the CD-ROM Review: This only affects the Linux version of the exam simulation software.
Someone forgot to tell the developer that versioning would be applied to the filename after it was submitted, so the executable binary that installs the ExamSim for Linux is looking for itself, by the wrong name.
IT'S SIMPLE TO FIX! Just copy the file "examsim-linux-1.0-setup" from the "ExamSim" folder on the CD-ROM to a hard disk and rename it "examsim.setup". Re-execute it and the exam simulation will be installed properly.
We'll be getting this fixed so it won't be happening for the next printing/edition, apologies to those who tried to install the Linux version and then had to *gulp* use the Windows Version.
