Review: I found this book to be a breath of fresh air! The Word of God is still alive, active, and relevant for living today.

Summary: Can be read cover to cover with the greatest enthusiasm.
Review: In The Complete Guide to the Book opf Proverbs, Cody Jones combines six popular translations of Proverbs (New King James, New Revised Standard, New Century, New International Version, King James & New Living Translation) in parallel with an in-depth commentary.

Jones' superb commentary enhanced our understanding of one of the most popular books of the Bible and provides a thumbnail sketch of every character of the Bible referenced in Proverbs.

The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs can be read cover to cover with the greatest enthusiasm, and well serves to be dipped into again and again for students of Scripture seeking a more profound understanding of Proverbs, and clergy in need of a fresh appraisal and presentation of the most contemporary applicable of the Old Testament.

Summary: A useful reference, BUT...
Review: In view of the glowing reports by other readers, I am reluctant to say so but, frankly, I am disappointed in this work. It is a useful reference, but I find it somewhat superficial in its treatment. I have found the older, more modest "Everyman's Bible Commentary" to provide a deeper analysis, and to better tie Proverbs to other scripture.

Summary: Interesting and Very Readable
Review: The author, Dr Cody L Jones, has obviously done his homework. This is no mere collection of proverbs, but is a serious 568-page work that is for both reading and reference. The first 23 pages include a list of charts, a guide to pronounciation, and an outline of the structure of Proverbs. Pages 25-256 are a commentary on Proverbs. The comments are interesting and very readable, and they put things into a historical setting. The book includes many historical drawings and photos to give the reader a sense of the culture of the time. The next section (pages 257-315) provides a topical guide to Proverbs, with 96 topics arranged alphabetically. Each topic is amplified by one or more verses. The third principal section (pages 317-545) offers the full texts of six different versions in parallel: New King James, New Revised Standard, New Century, New International, King James and New Living. While some versions are more orthodox and strictly translated, others are more readable; and the ability to see all six versions of a verse on the same page spread certainly is an aid to understanding. If this book piques your interest in the book of Proverbs-and it might-it is well worth the cover price. There is much wisdom to be gained in Proverbs and this tool can help you uncover it.

Summary: Fascinating and practical
Review: The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is fascinating and practical- the perfect antidote for those who believe the Bible is overwhelmingly complex or not pertinent to life today.

Summary: Six parallel translations of Proverbs are especially useful
Review: The wisdom contained in Proverbs has always been of particularinterest to me, and through the years I've acquired a number of useful commentaries on the Book of Proverbs . And I must agree with what Cody Jones briefly touched upon in the introduction to his book - that all too many commentaries (both older and more modern ones) are entirely overly academic and rather arid in their treatments, which in most cases clearly are not intended to help the average person in the practical, day-to-day pursuit of wisdom.

I must say that I very much enjoy the format of Cody's new work, and consult it frequently on a daily basis since I've purchased it. What I've found especially useful is the six parallel translations of the Proverbs near the end of the book.

Summary: Cody Jones' Book on Proverbs is a waste
Review: This book is a terrible waste of money. If you want a decent book on Proverbs see Michael Fox's Anchor Bible Proverbs 1-9. Cody Jones is not informed about true Proverbs research and Hebrew text and most of the reviews on Amazon are more PR attempts to cover the poor substance of this book. I bought it and what a waste
