Rating: Summary: Principles and practices of basic fire service rescue Review: Rescue incidents are often extremely dangerous for rescue personnel and require the application of knowledge, skill, and teamwork. This manual presents the principles and practices of basic fire service rescue in a manner that will enable the student to safely and effectively participate in rescue operations. Included are the most common rescue situations to which firefighters may be called, but some specialty rescue situations are omitted here, such as wilderness search/rescue and underwater search/rescue.This IFSTA manual describes two general elements regarding rescue, assessing the local need for rescue services and incident management. Taking care of planning according to the lessons of the assessment is an important first step which can improve a fire department's capability to management the actual incident. The assessment will involve evaluating the response district and determining potential rescue situations. Then the fire department or rescue squad can better acquire the needed equipment, receive the needed training, and learn about other organizations that can supply specialized assistance during an emergency. Each chapter is extensively illustrated with photos and drawings, including some in color. Eleven chapters make up the manual: 1. Introduction to Rescue Services 2. Rescue Scene Management 3. Rescue Vehicles and Equipment 4. Rope Rescue 5. Fireground Search and Rescue 6. Structural Collapse Rescue 7. Elevator Rescue 8. Confined Space Rescue 9. Water and Ice Rescue 10. Trench Rescue 11. Special Rescues. Each chapter has a review section with subsections for vocabulary building, application of knowledge, and review activities with verbs such as identify, explain, list, and describe. Readers are advised to read each chapter, underline or highlight important terms and topics, and study the illustrations and captions. Readers will respond to the review instructions and then check the answers against those referenced in parentheses. The technical content is easy to read and easy to use.
Rating: Summary: Awareness Level Training Only Review: This book is an awareness level book. This isn't a traditional IFSTA training text. This book provides an introduction to various types of rescue operations. The type of information in this book is the type of stuff that would benefit somebody prior to taking a specialized rescue course. There isn't really much comprehensive information in this book. This is the core basics of rescue procedures. Unfortunately there are a few sections missing that are vital rescue operations. Vehicle rescue & extrication, and swiftwater rescue are not included in this book. The only section that's covered well is fireground search and rescue, but even that is pretty basic. The book does a good job of teaching the reader what type of rescue they may be called to do but doesn't teach how to do it. This is Rescue Awareness training. This book would be very useful to a new firefighter or somebody who is taking specialized rescue courses. It would be good to read specific chapters before actually taking the courses. Unfortunately the study guide is no longer being produces in paper, only on CD.
