Rating: Summary: A view from the 'other side'. Review: James augments the traditional books written on starting your own business that just focus on the business plan, funding, distribution, etc. He takes another view - the personal side. The book was right on! Hit the mark! To me, based on my experiences of the last nine years, The Spare Room Tycoon, "tells it like it really is." I have recently referred the book to an individual that is looking to embark on the journey of self-employment.

Rating: Summary: Reflections on Life and Work Review: James Chan's book has been an inspiration and has helped me put into perspective my personal values as they relate to work and life. It also provided me with a sense of spiritual fulfillment and affirmation of my personal thoughts regarding business and relationships developed in our daily work. James Chan's personal story is profound while the stories of the other Spare Room Tycoons he interviews give insight into the "nuts and bolts" of being an independent. The book has also facilitated my becoming more self-reflective as I begin on the journey to becoming a Spare Room Tycoon.
Rating: Summary: Insightful, real, honest Review: Talks about real life stories of innovators going on their own and some of the "big" and "small" issues faced by them. Deals with issues on having to be self motivated, being a salesman in good and bad, making sure you talk the details of a project- such as billing up front, how to deal with inevitable depression and down times... One of the most memorable ideas for me is that you will make mistakes- and then make the same ones again. To me this is comforting- perhaps in the way of knowing I am not the only one to suffer from such lapses in reason. This is not a checklist for going into business, but more a personality review and list of challenges for the small business person to know they are going to face. With a bit of knowledge as to how it was handled by another. I beieve the book of value in reafirming your spirit- not just the first time you read it- but to have dog eared pages to refer back to when things get a little less than happy!
