Rating: Summary: The real story about his book Review: I bought this book based on the titles of the TOC but when I read it I was very dissapointed with its content. I thought this would be a book that was to prepare YOU for the enlistment process but instead found that it was written by a former recruiter and clearly does not give any advise that isn't already common sense. For example there is a paragraph entitled "What the recruiter can and cannot promise you." This section didn't cover ANYTHING even remotely close to what its title says. This book is on the side of the military and is a good tool FOR RECRUITERS! Don't waste your money on this book if you want help on the enlistment process.
Rating: Summary: Very useful book Review: I bought this book because I was curious, not because I was interested in joining the military. Nevertheless, I am married to a Soldier and a daughter of an Air Force officer, so I'm familiar with the lifestyle. I found Ostrow's guide to Joining the Military to be very informative and interesting. He's explained the process for joining the military, and he's covered all of the branches, from the very first conversation with the recruiter to showing up for basic training, to taking the oath of enlistment. I found this book easy to read and perfect for someone of high school age. It's slim and easy to carry, making it portable for someone who is busily preparing for a fledgling career in the military. Contrary to the previous reviewer who stated an opinion that read in essence that this book is a recruiting tool, I believe that Ostrow was quite fair and even handed in his analysis of the military as a career. I got the impression that he understands that it's not a choice that is ideal for everyone. I don't believe that this book is propaganda for the military. Instead, I honestly believe that Ostrow's meant to write a book that would help people make the right decision-- because when people make the wrong one, everybody loses... the servicemember, the military, and the American people who pay their salaries with their tax dollars. Honestly, if you are looking for a book about enlisting in the armed forces, this one is a sure bet. However, I will caution that there is very little information for those who aspire to be officers because that information is beyond the scope of the book.
Rating: Summary: This is not a review Review: This is not a review but I wanted to address whomever puts the reviews online. I am the author of this book and I suspect that the last reviewer may be another publisher or author trying to discredit my book and, therefore, help their own sales. To give a "1 star" when the other review gave a "5" and even on other web sites It's rated as 5 stars (for example BN.com both reviewers gave 5 stars!) I am not trying to question anyone's opinion but when there are only 2 reviews and one of them gives a one it hurts book sales. I question this review, especially since the reviewer does not give a name! I wrote this book to help people through the enlistment process, it was the first book of its kind. This kind of review not only hurts sales but also may keep someone who needs this book from buying it. Thanks!
