Rating: Summary: A Pro Speaker's Primer & then some.... Review: Best book I've read on the business of professional speaking. Shoots holes in some of the traditional sacred cows (it's about time). Very thought provoking--for both beginning and established pro speakers. Weiss even covers that secret topic of actual specific dollar fees! As a professional speaker, I am pleased to heartily recommend this book to others.
Rating: Summary: Not just for Speakers! Review: I am a corporate entertainer - comedy magician - and have found this to be one of the best business books I have ever read. From selling, to marketing, to establishing fees, to finding your ideal client this book is terrific. I recomend it to anyone that is in a business that has anything to do with getting up in front of an audience; magician, comedian, musician, singer, speaker, trainer, consultant...I have just purchased "Million Dollar Consulting" and am enjoying that as much.
Rating: Summary: Money Talks Is A Must-Read For The Aspiring, Accomplished Review: You have heard the saying: money talks, and b.s. walks. In this book, there is no b.s. to be found and plenty of insightful, practical, and at times humorous pointers on what to do to maximize your effectiveness as a speaker. At the same time, Alan Weiss provides cautionary tales on what NOT to do. He has a terrific conversational style but what makes it even more valuable is that it is loaded with substance borne of his extensive experience as a business consultant and professional speaker. As I read the book, I gained reaffirmation of some things that I've been doing right in my own fledgling speaking career. In addition, I detected weaknesses in my approach that Weiss urges all of us to shore up. Among his great tips: why go out of your way to specialize so much when that means closing off so many prospective audiences (and, hence, paying clients)? I have broadened my sights on who I'll be considering a prospective client. In addition, Weiss stresses the importance of offering multiple options (and corresponding fees) for a client, so you are operating from a perspective of "which one" they will select, rather than "whether or not" they will select you. I also appreciate Weiss' candor when it comes to agencies, associations or other parties who, in his view, are less than stellar. He is not out to make friends---he obviously has enough already. Instead, he speaks truth. And though you may say "ouch" when a zinger hits close to home, you'll be better off for giving Money Talks a very studious read.
