Rating: Summary: Artfully Engaging How-to Review: Artful Persuasion is hard to put down. Highly instructive and most engaging, it distills the key thinking on the art and science of persuasion - including the conscious and unconscious factors people base their decision making on. Everyone can learn something from it. Even for those who don't often need to sell to or negotiate with others, there's lots to learn about how others try to persuade YOU. Each chapter concludes with a handy bullet list of key lessons. Mills draws upon a rich and eclectic trove of witty, sometimes salty, real-world examples from business, politics, history, and elsewhere. To his credit, he reminds the reader throughout about the unethical uses of persuasion; there's a handy section on how people and organizations (like the media) mislead through graphics. This is a book that will be on my desk, within reach - as long as I have clients. (And a husband. And a family. And neighbors. You get the point.) Since rating scales are relative, and I'm not familiar with all the leading books on the subject, I can't rightly give the book 5 stars. So consider my 4 stars an absolute rating of "terrific."

Rating: Summary: Better off buying books by Robert Cialdini Review: This book clearly speaks to some interesting research concerning persuasion and influence, however, it appeared to me that anyone with exposure to Dr. Cialdini's research would find this repetitive and more focused on training those who would wish to become "black market" persuaders. I might also argue that the more interesting parts of Mr. Mills book appeared to be a re-write of Cialdini's work. While it is an o.k. book for those with no background in persuasion or social psychology, I would recommend reading "Influence-Science and Practice" and/or "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" by Dr. Cialdini. Many of the points made in Mr. Mills books relates to the research studied in both of these books. However, Dr. Cialdini's books are more enjoyable to read, more informative and instructive, and clearly speaks to the ethics of persuasion with sincere eloquence.
Rating: Summary: Everyone will Listen- Wisdom and Tools for Success Review: This is a really enjoyable and immediately useful book. It is the best gift for the realist in each of us that knows how rewarding effective communication is when our point of view is understood and accepted. Harry Mills offers us this most practical, well crafted tool, a humorous, well organized and richly documented guide to successful communications. I first read Artful Persuasion during my last flight to Dhaka. The tactics and strategies shared helped make this trip my most successful one. I find myself carrying, reading and using the book here in New York too. As I use the ideas so clearly outlined, I find myself smiling with anticipation. Agreement and cooperation do make me happy, and this book is a welcome, well researched guide to realisitic methods of persuasion. There are many reasons why Harry Mills' book is so valuable. The author has done his homework. He shares his sources and data in an accessible, reader-friendly manner. His focus always is on the subject. His style shows that he is himself a great communicator and persuader. The design, writing, anecdotes, quotes and graphs all make this a book to read and to use, to keep at hand as an always important tool. As a teacher of conflict resolution in New York City public high schools since 1989, and as an American working with our cultural programs in Romania before then, I've often found myself actively involved in situations calling for negotiation and mediation. I've searched for and read many materials which focus on communication and persuasion. This refreshing and lively book is the best. It shares insights and practices which would have served me well when I worked in Bucharest, and when I started to teach in the Bronx. Each concise chapter is an independently useful resource. The checklists, pointers and reminders show that the author knows and respects his readers. There is nothing pedantic or heavy here, nothing that will allow this book to join those which gather dust, mostly unread because so unreadable. For anyone who desires to better communicate and more readily influence others, whether in personal, business or government relations, Artful Persuasion is a wonderful resource to use, to enjoy and to share.
