Rating: Summary: If only today's schools used these......... Review: At the end of my daughter's kindergarten class (she was 5) I was told by her school that she would probably start reading in first grade. Half way through first grade, I was told she was a little slow and not picking up things as fast as she could. At this point, I stepped in and taught my daughter to read using "Noah Websters' Blue Backed Speller" and "McGuffey's Readers.""McGuffey's Readers" are a delight. I read the books cover to cover and loved every single story contained therein. These two literary tools [the Readers and the BB Speller] were how America learned to read for 150 years. And after *wasting* 18 months listening to reading "specialists" in public schools, *I* taught my daughter to read in under 6 weeks. She is now a rising 8th grader and a prolific reader. I *highly* recommend McGuffey's Readers for any parent who wants to teach their child to read. It is a book you will keep forever, and it is something to be handed down to your children and their children and on and on. And as a prior reviewer stated, they are a real keyhole peak into a bygone time. Plus, the stories are very moral and leave a strong [good!] impression on young minds.
Rating: Summary: awesome reading ! Review: I am now 21 and when I was homeschooled these are the books my parents used, they are great! There are values in these books that are not found in the books used in the public school system( I attended public schools as well) and now that my parents are getting back into homeschooling my siblings we can use nothing else but McGuffey's Readers.
Rating: Summary: As likely to teach your child to read as anything else. Review: I am somewhat puzzled by those parents who swear that McGuffey's Eclectic Readers are *the* way to teach your children to read. They are undoubtedly very good. But you can teach your child to read using any series of readers, old or new, Christian, secular humanist or Jewish. What's required is that you sit down and spend the time with them that they need in order to learn to read. Keep the stress level low, make it an enjoyable experience for you and the child, and the child will learn, regardless of whether you use McGuffey's Eclectic Readers, the Bible, Green Eggs and Ham, or the Yellow Pages. Mind you, this is just the uninformed opinion of a reading "specialist" in the public schools! :)
Rating: Summary: Character-building Books Review: I love McGuffey's readers. I taught my children to read with them. They use the effective phonics method. But more than that, they contain inspiring vignettes that teach virtues and build character in the children who read them. They are a priceless part of your child's character education. I highly recommend them to every loving parent.

Rating: Summary: Good reading from the past Review: I love this collecton of books!Children that went to school then life was so simple so was there education.I would have to say it was reading at it's purest form.Something is lost in our society and that is simplicity.I enjoy reading books from the past and it is nice to tell children how simple life was as a child back then.Iam glad we have books to remind us,and to teach us of good reading. The black and white pictures also add the beauty to these wonderful books.
Rating: Summary: classic learning Review: I received this boxed set when I was 10 years old and I'm now in my 30's and I still read through them. I have a 5 year old that has learned to read from the primer and we both love to take turns reading aloud from the books. I think this collection is a great way to introduce children to literature. The books are classic and timeless and there is nothing wrong with learning some simple wholesome values from the past!

Rating: Summary: Quality Teaching. Review: The McGuffey Readers are from a time when parents and teachers had high expectations for children. Children were expected to become proficient in spelling, reading and speach, and morality wasn't subjective. Perhaps a return to the old style wouldn't be so bad... If my wife and I are fortunate enough to have children, these books will definitely be in our repertoire.
