Rating: Summary: Things that go Bump in the NIght in the Windy City Review: Author Ursula Bielski not only has put together a well researched book on Chicago ghost folklore but one that serves in part, as a intriguing history lesson on events and places in the city. After reading this book I ran out and got "More Chicago Haunts" (also by the same author) needless to say, I have not been disappointeds with either book.
Rating: Summary: Spooky, not hokey! Review: So many of these ghostly compendiums are sloppily researched and written for the lowest common denominator. Not so with this book. Bielski is first and foremost a historian, a "ghost scholar" second. Her stories of these Chicago legends, many of them done to death (sorry), resonate with a scholar's respect for research and a sociologist's eye for the big picture. A ripping good read.
Rating: Summary: A Great Tour Guide Review: This book is fantastic! I took a ghost tour around Halloween and met someone who told me about this book. Of course, this is the revised addition. Not only do I own both copies, I have purchased many as gifts! You don't need to pay someone for a ghost tour. Buy the book and gather your friends and have a wonderful time! For those of you who are afraid, no need to be. This isn't a horror book! Chances of seeing a ghost, depends ... do you believe?
Rating: Summary: Not Edited, Has Errors Review: This book is wonderful. The stories are riviting and often heartbreaking, the layout is easy to read, and Bielski's command of the English language is appreciated. The photos are clear and wonderful. It is obvious that Bielski devoted countless hours of research and interviews to write this book. The result is pure enjoyment. If it's spooky in Chicago, it's in this book. No stone is left unturned, from the Fort Dearborn massacre to the Biograph theater where Public Enemy #1 was gunned down to a fun little part about ghostlore commonly told by Chicago's children, such as "I believe in Mary Worth" and "Bloody Mary Bloody Mary Bloody Mary". :) This book is a fascinating glimpse into the Chicago that most people never know. Buy it, buy it, buy it!
Rating: Summary: Not Edited, Has Errors Review: This book was not researched properly or edited. Considering it says that the Author is a native of the Chicago area she must never have left her office to verify locations she put in her book. For example, it says Morton College on Harlem Ave. in Berwyn, Illinois is haunted. The problem is that Morton College is located on Central Ave. in Cicero, Illinois and that is the haunted location--some 4 miles apart. Morton West High School is located on Harlem in Berwyn and is not known to be haunted at all. Also it is never mentioned that Morton College was originally located in Morton East High School on Austin Blvd. in Cicero and that building is known to be haunted. If an error like this made it into the book, I would question the accuracy of the other parts of the book.
Rating: Summary: Dillinger Walks Again in Lincoln Park! Review: This compilation of Chicoland ghost stories has inspired me to explore some unique areas of the city. I've been to the Red Lion Pub, and so far, I haven't seen any spectres. Down the street is the Biograph Theater, where it is said the restless spirit of John Dillinger can be seen running down an alley. All in all, one of the best ghost story books I've ever read! Read it in a well-lit room.
Rating: Summary: good reading but a bit complicated Review: This is a good book, but its more history and a little complicated then I would want it to be. You owe it to yourself if your looking for Ghost stories to check out the 2nd book written on this subject by the author its MUCH better then the first. It has more personal accounts then this one does.
Rating: Summary: Excellent ghost book Review: This is an excellent book. It has many stories about hauntings in Chicago that you might or might not know. I loved the part about Bachelor's Grove. This book is not a children's ghost story book and is not recommended to be read on a stormy night, alone, unless you're looking for a good scare.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book on Chicago haunts I have ever read. Review: Ursula Bielski did a wonderful job on capturing the stories behind Chicago's ghost lore. I am a ghost hunter in Chicago and have had the pleasure to meet Ms. Bielski. This is the best book and a must read for all ghost hunters. This book has all the best Chicago hauntings.
