Rating: Summary: A "must have" for parents of all aged children Review: I offered to review this book, as I love to read new material but didn't think it would be something that I would recommend. Although a mom in my 30's I am not into this generation's "granola parenting". I don't believe in parenting by the book or running to a book every time that a problem arises with my children. The book arrived two days before Christmas and it was set aside in the bustle of the season. When life returned to normal I sat down, book and coffee in hand, and began to read. From the first page it was obvious that I had judged this book wrong. Out of this book jumped a new, wonderful, and inventive idea in parenting books. It is not cut-and-dry: "you did this wrong, you must do this to fix it." No, something much more creative and helpful treated me that day. A book chock full of ideas...good ideas. And not just one, but a few different ideas to resolve a problem as the same problem does not always have the same root. As the mom of an Eight Year Old bed-wetter, I jumped right to the "B's" (this book is arranged alphabetically, what a simplistic but wonderful idea!) and looked to see what wisdom awaited me. This, like all topics, is broken down into sections: Situation, Think About It, and Solutions. "SITUATION My child is out of diapers but continues to wet the bed. THINK ABOUT IT Bed-wetting has come out of the closet and is now recoginized as a common childhood problem. Twenty percent of five-year-olds and 10 percent of six-year-olds routinely wet their beds...." Perfect Parenting, Pages 32 & 33 This particular topic then had not one, but five different solutions depending on age and situation. Most of the ideas we have tried but there were a few new ones that we are working on. Yes, I admit it; I am following an 'advice book'. This book is not only helpful, but also interesting to read. The broad range of topics amazed me and it was interesting to see problems in print that you thought only your family had. One of my favourites was "Bathroom Jokes". As the mother of a six-year-old son, we have to deal with this quite often! Other unique topics include: * Bicycle, care of *Bicycle, won't wear helmet *Car, fighting in back seat *Day Care, cries when left at *Gifts, rude response to *Manners, at meal time *Read, doesn't want to *Telephone Interruptions *Vegetables, won't eat them *Video Games, excessive use of If you want a book that is not only helpful and insightful but a good entertaining read, this is a wonderful book for you. Elizabeth Pantley has done a wonderful job and changed my mind about Parenting Books.

Rating: Summary: Buy this book!! Review: If you buy no other parenting book, you have to have this one in your bookcase. It is easy to find the topic you want and has practical advice to get you out of almost any parenting problem. My baby is 6 mths old and I see this will be a well thumbed reference guide.
Rating: Summary: Good for Mommy Melt-Down Review: It's great for Mommy Melt-Down times, the time before dinner and between bedtime. Excellent easy straight to the point answers. Sort of on the kindred spirit soultions as the new revised edition of Mommy-CEO, by nationally syndicated parenting expert, Jodie Lynn. Both books offer lots of useful tips and both are a must have for all moms and dads. If we have a parenting question, it's usually in one of these books...........really! I try to read as many books as possible in the summer and early fall. These are two of my very favorite books. I have my kids and some who are not my kids but are always here in the household. It's great to be able to look up a "situation" quickly. You will enjoy both books.
Rating: Summary: Book for the busy parent of the 90's Review: Perfect Parenting The Dictionary of 1000 Parenting Tips by Elizabeth Pantley No time to read those best selling parenting books in your quest to be the (near) perfect parent ? Relax, do I have the book for you! Perfect Parenting by Elizabeth Pantley is designed for the harried, but conscientious and concerned, parents of the nineties. Perfect Parenting is exactly what it claims to be. It is a dictionary, and set up in that format. Locate the key word for your concern (eg. baby talk, forgetfulness, nap, picky eater), you get the idea. Below the key word you will first find a description of the situation (as described by someone just like you and I, and probably a mother since we have more worry cells in our brains than men!) Next comes a few lines entitled Think About It. I think this section is to try and get us calmed down and rational and to see things from our childs point of view. Finally, comes not one but several possible suggestions for tackling the problem. Pick one that suits your philosophy or just plain sounds good and try it out. Most of them are the kind of common sense responses that make you stop and think, "Now why didn't I think of that?" Throughout the book, Pantley's responses are knowledgeable, practical and wise. Her approach to child rearing seems loving but firm, sensitive and realistic. The focus is on common childhood behaviours (not medical concerns). This book would be a great gift to a parent, especially a first time parent. I did not find any direct reference to multiples but certainly alot of the issues we face are considered (eg.competitiveness, sharing, mess and morning chaos). Perhaps the best thing about the book is it is user friendly and fast. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: THE Perfect Parenting Book Review: Perfect parents? Us? No, not yet. But with the help from a book like PERFECT PARENTING we're one step closer to becoming a BETTER parent to our three children. The easy to use dictionary style makes this a great resouce when you have to have an idea NOW. My husband, the reluctant reader, has even looked up some of our current parenting issues; It's that easy to use! And, of course, Elizabeth Pantley's ideas on every issue from Accident Prone to Yelling inspires us to be the best parents we can. Short of the Bible, PERFECT PARENTING and Elizabeth Pantley's other book, KID COOPERATION, will be the best read books in our home.
Rating: Summary: This book is first class - high quality advice and format. Review: The strength of this book is the way practical advice is put into an easy-to-use format. There are other books that give some of this information and other books that have an easy-to-use format, but this is the only book that I know of that puts so much practical information (1,000 practical parenting tips) all into one uusable volume. Congratulations to Elizabeth Pantley for writing this comprehensive reference for parents.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Parenting Review: This book has been thoroughly researched and contains well thought out, common sense advice for parents. From "Accident prone" to "Yelling" the problems are set out alphabetically, enabling easy access. The solutions are multiple, increasing the chance that the they will suit your family or parenting style and if they don't they are still sure to inspire you. Each problem has the "situation", a "think about it" section - which often clarifies the problem and informs you on child development and a variety of "solutions" - often as many six or more, giving you a wide variety to choose from. The book isn't dry or dull, Elizabeth's innovative ideas show imagination and wisdom. A handy reference or a required parenting manual? However you choose to use it, this book will improve your parenting skills, encourage your imagination and fire your enthusiasm. It will remind you that parenting doesn't have to be difficult and thankless. Say goodbye to battles of wills, rebellion and heartache - learn easier methods of training your children, which utilise their "stages" and personality rather than fighting against them. As a mother of three children, I heartily recommend this book for parents at all stages. From infant problems to teenage rebellion, it is all covered and is done very, very well.
