Rating: Summary: Great for expectant parents out shopping before baby arrives Review: I'm a first time dad,and an engineer who loves to understand and explore items to the fullest before buying them. This book let me compare items and understand what the quality features were before I even went to a store. We live over 100 miles away from the nearest baby store, so I was prepared before I even entered the store. The book also has hundreds of web addresses to comparison shop or browse photos at your leisure. No complaints.
Rating: Summary: We've saved at least $300 so far! Review: This is our first baby and we were unsure of which products were the best and the best buy for our money. We were able to buy a Peg Perego stroller for $99 at Baby Depot, usually a $300 stroller. We also purchased a Child Craft crib there for $154, usually priced at $280. Both of these items were last years styles, but who cares? We now are on the hunt for other big ticket items (mattress, car seat) and thanks to this book we know which brands to look for and which stoes to hit. My husband was skeptical about this book, but he now consults it on everything before we buy anything. Definetly a must read for new parents!
Rating: Summary: Be more objective! Review: This is generally a very good book for new parents to use as a guide. The only thing I do not like is they give lower ratings to companies based on their personal tastes (ex:Bedding Prints). I want a professional opinion of the product and if the quality is good. Not if they like the Bear Prints.
Rating: Summary: This is the first book new parents-to-be need to buy! Review: When we found out we were having twins, we REALLY wondered how we would figure out what to buy. This book was a life saver. I carried it everywhere we went shopping and it literally became our shopping bible for babies. I found it much better than the Consumer Report Baby Products Guide. The email list in the back is worth the book alone. The book is very easy and fun to read too. We have been pleased with all the recommendations we took from this book. I intend to buy it for all my friends having babies.
Rating: Summary: BUY this book before you buy anything else for your baby!!! Review: Forget the "What to Expect when Expecting"... You will learn more from this book about what a baby needs and what he/she can live without. I thought this was one of the BEST books I bought when I was pg. I have bought it for shower gifts, and told many, many people about it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED even if you already have a child/children. I have saved a lot of $$$ with this book.
Rating: Summary: It is a "must buy" for anyone having a baby!!!!! Review: My husband and I were so thankful that this book was written. It had clear-cut answers on all the questions we had about the numerous products out there. It gave us confidence while shopping and now... we buy it for all our friends as a congratulations on your pregnancy gift!
Rating: Summary: Great book for both saving money and buying quality stuff Review: I have not calculated how much I saved with this book but I am sure it's well over $250. I shopped on babycatalog.com for a stroller and saved $50.I bought Simmons Crib and pais $200 for it instead of $450 for another crib which actually got a C rating in this book but was recommeded to me by a salesperson. The advice for baby layette is also great.I highly recommend this book to those parents who want the best for their kids but at reasonable cost.I would not recommend it for the parents who think that if they pay the very top dollar, they are getting the best and for those who think that their kids should only wear designer clothes(realize,it's more to show off to strangers than to make your kid comfy) Definitely search the web sites that Fields recommend. I am very superstitious so we did not buy any items before the baby was born. Using this book, however, we went to the store a month before baby was born and selected big ticket items such as crib, stroller, car seat and mattress. I then prepared a list for my husband with item description, manufacturer, cost, quantity, etc. As a result,he and my mom in law spent only 2 hours doing shopping for the baby instead of 10 of they did not have the list. This book starts you off right in the long journey which not only requires your love but your money as well. While we should give our children unlimited love, we can sure limit how much we spend.
Rating: Summary: EVERY parent should read this book Review: I've read all the customer reviews, and while another glowing review for this book is probably overkill, so be it. I cannot say enough good things about this book. This is truly the book that the Consumer Reports baby book should have been, but sadly is not. Everything about having a baby is confusing, but the Fields' take the fear out of it. You want only the best for your child, figuring that if you goof, s/he'll be scarred for life. The authors are able to guide you through the maze of baby items to help you pick the right products for your budget. Indispensible!
Rating: Summary: Saved us a ton of money! Buy it for your expectant friends. Review: I can't say enough good things about this book. For my wife and I, it was like having a super-savvy friend walking with us up and down the aisles of "Babies-R-Us" and all the other stores that can overwhelm first-time parents. The Fields' do a great job telling you about items that will be almost certain WASTES of money -- I had no clue. So often people get caught up in the purchasing/registering frenzy that they don't really think through what they will really need when the little one comes. This book helped us to avoid some costly miscalculations. The authors' reviews of the big-ticket items -- cribs, strollers, high-chairs, etc. are all indispensible and frankly, they beat the plastic pants off Consumer Reports' Baby Guide. This book will always hold a hallowed place in our home for the wisdom it gave us dummies as we headed in to the $$$baby-zone$$$. It turned out not to be so expensive after all. Thanks Alan and Denise! Highly highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Confused? I was... Until I bought this book! Review: I'm going to be a first time dad soon, and was completely confused by the "stuff" you needed for a baby. ("What the heck is a 'layette'?") And I didn't just have to know which "stuff" I needed, but which brand of the "stuff" was best. Actual parents describe in plain language what items you need and who's brands to buy and not buy. But they go further! They help you understand where you can save some money and still provide quality for your child; what items you don't need, where you can buy generic and which items to buy for quality rather than cost. They point you to the places to shop to find bargains, both in your neighborhood and on-line. All of this is written with a no-nonsense approach. There's no politics being played here; if the product is awful, they'll tell ya'! I came onto Amazon intending to buy the Consumer Reports guide to Baby Gear and chose this book instead. It was the best decision I could have made!! All I can say is: Buy This Book!
