Rating: Summary: A Must Have For First-Time Parents! Review: Before you ever set foot in Babies 'R Us, you must read this book! The first trip I took to the baby mega-store was an overwhelming experience with too many options that left me without a clue as to how to begin. (There were tons of different types of baby gear and garb, and each item had multiple brands with multiple styles and costs.) The bottom line is that I had no frame of reference to know what I needed, when I needed it or how to make an informed decision.Thankfully, a friend recommended Baby Bargains - and luckily it was before I had purchased anything. Baby Bargains breaks information into digestible categories - covering everything from cribs and strollers to diapers and clothing. It provides overviews of brands, product features, prices and even makes ratings as to what they consider the GOOD, BETTER, and BEST from each category. In addition, it tells you what items you absolutely NEED, what things are nice to have and what items you shouldn't bother with. Not only does it explain what "layette" means to all the novices, but it makes recommendations on the appropriate quantity of blankets, sleepers and such to get you started. Finally, it provides various resources for finding the products you want and for finding deals. I found baby bedding online at a much lower cost than in stores and even got free shipping. Talk to friends with kids, but also get this book and take it with you while you shop!
Rating: Summary: The BEST baby products book out there Review: Don't let the book title fool you. The book focuses on the BEST products for babies, not just the best bargains. Sometimes they'll even recommend a high-end item if it out-performs the others in quality and safety. The authors provide lots of practical advice on all of the current products out there today. I highly recommend this book! A must for any new parent....
Rating: Summary: Must Have Review: A friend loaned this book to me and I decided to go buy the most recent edition(4). This book is FANTASTIC. I've used it so much and it makes me feel so informed. They don't take payments from people pushing their products, so I trust the author's input.
Rating: Summary: A must have for first-time parents. Review: Although it is riddled with typos, this book is an indispensable resource for new parents gearing up for their first baby. Whether you are looking for bargains or not, this book will help you sort through the overwhelming amount of baby products out there and figure out what you need and what products are the best and safest. Their detailed reviews by brand name of everything from monitors to strollers to carseats (and everything in between) has prepared me to register for and purchase items with confidence.
Rating: Summary: A Must Have for Every Parent-to-Be Review: This book has been truly a life saver. I read the 3rd Edition when I started trying to get pregnant. A year later, I was finally pregnant, but I had lost my copy. Like most people, I assumed one brand is the same as the next. My first thought was to register for the most attractive fabrics, colors, etc. when I dropped by my local baby store. While there, I was overwhelmed by the selection. I decided I needed to do my research and bought a new copy of the book. I bought the 4th Edition and read it cover to cover. Safety, comfort (baby & parent), and price are the focus of this book. The authors even discuss which stores have better return/exchange policies. This will come in handy when you find a product isn't quite right. If you purchase this book, check out their website for the latest updates and recall information. This book is worth every penny.
Rating: Summary: Great Information but Poorly organized Review: The information in this book is very helpful when buying baby stuff, but it is poorly organized. You need to read it cover to cover & can't just browse through as you might expect with a reference book. For example, the section on high chairs mentions a product that converts to a swing, but the section on swings does not mention the high chair (or if it did, it wasn't easy to find because I didn't see it) Another example, pg 84 mentions a safety hazard that some diaper pails may have (Deodorizers may have toxic chemicals) However, in the extended discussions on Diaper pails several chapters later, this isn't mentioned. They need to get a really good editor for the next edition.
Rating: Summary: Baby Bargains Review: I found the 3rd edition of this book to be so helpful that when I saw the 4th edition, 2 months before my due date, I bought it too. The sections on cribs, car seats, strollers and high chairs are particularly informative. Some other sections (e.g., baby monitors) are not nearly as good. The book provides numerous web sites (for manufacturers, retailers and government agencies). The web site maintained by the authors is also helpful and when I couldn't find my way around it, I got a quick response to my email requesting help. I have given this book to pregnant friends and recommended it so highly to my doctor that she got a copy for her waiting room.
Rating: Summary: A Must Have -- Great way to get educated on what you need Review: I read this book from cover to cover. It really helped me get acclimated to all of the products to be purchased. My son is seven months old and I still refer to this book. Many times people stopped me in the store because they had heard of this book and wanted to take a look. It may not always save you money (in my case I always bought the highest rated product that was more expensive), but it teaches you about what to look for when inspecting different items. The rating and descriptions are great!
Rating: Summary: Best Baby Book: Period Review: I think this is the most useful baby book on the market. Despite its title, this book does not show you how to go cheap: it shows you how to ignore stupid trends and focus your time, energy and money on the important things. It stresses quality and safety over quantity and offers very solid advice on everything, not to mention that it's written in a down-to-earth, humorous fashion. I read it from cover to cover in a day and found it far more useful than the Bestseller "What to expect when you're expecting." If you don't want to spend a lot of money on baby/pregnancy books (which, by the way is one of their money-saving tips), then skip all the rest and buy this book!
Rating: Summary: A must have for expecting parents! Review: As you begin the adventure into parenthood, it's difficult to navigate all of the baby stores and make it out with some extra cash for your baby's education! But the Baby Bargains book is there to help. It made our pregnancy fun, we started with the furniture, reading each chapter one at a time. I know we saved money because we made informed choices; plus there were less returns and less frustration over products we didn't use. It's a great book! Well written too! And a great gift for expecting parents!
