Rating: Summary: A great book to find the best baby items Review: I have to admit I was a little wary of the title of this book. It conjured up images of rummage sales and clipping bar codes to send in for savings. Personally, when shopping for baby items, I was not necessarily looking for ways to save money, but willing to pay whatever dollar amount to for the safest and best products out there. I am willing to pay more for items that are not only the safest, but offer convenience and better features. That being said, I did have to buy a set of everything for our own home/car, many things for the grandparents' houses as well as for our vacation home, so I wanted to know where I could get a better value for the 2nd and 3rd sets without compromising safety (for baby monitors, exersaucers and the like), knowing I would never skimp on the car seats, cribs, etc. This book absolutely helped navigate through the tons and tons of products one needs for a baby, giving very comprehensive descriptions regarding safety and features of each product. It breaks down the best choices for you based on your lifestyle habits and your needs - i.e. these are the best strollers for people living in a city, these are the best for people primarily using it in an indoor shopping mall, etc. I did not buy any major piece of baby gear without first consulting this book. My copy is dog-eared and looks as though it has been around for years. I plan to buy a new edition for our next baby, and give this as a gift to all my pregnant friends....
Rating: Summary: Adopting parents - Buy this book! Review: You know all that great information that pregnant couples get in their childbirth classes? What to buy.....When to buy it, etc.? For those of us adopting, it's harder to come by such practical advice. This book was a Godsend to me. I was embarrassed to admit that I didn't even know what a layette was until reading this book - and felt too goofy to ask. This book cuts through the hype and tells you what you REALLY need to buy. If an expensive model is the best, they tell you that. If you can get the same features from a cheaper version - they tell you to save your money. I don't know what I would have done without this book!
Rating: Summary: Best purchase you can make-will save you $ and time! Review: The advice this book gives you will save you $ and time. $ because it will knock some sense into you that you really DON'T need to spend $ on Dreft, baby wiper warmers, and other nonsensical things which as a first time Mom I thought I needed for my baby. Time because it will save you the time finding many of these items with the resources they provide in the book. I am a mother of a 4 and 2 year old so i have some knowledge of these things. This is a purchase everyone should make. It's the first gift I give to friends of mine who tell me when they are pregnant!
Rating: Summary: How-to for buying sensibly without sacrificing quality A++ Review: We are expecting our first child in a few months and knew practically nothing about baby products - this book is a lifesaver! The best parts are the no-nonsense recommendations (or discouragement) on specific product features. It provides the perfect advice for buying sensibly without sacrificing quality or safety. For ex, I wouldn't have known to buy crib sheets with elastic all the way around vs. elastic only in corners. I feel very confident now about selecting the items for the baby registry, and can't wait to bring this book with me to the store to pick out the items! Nevermind the money we will save by not buying frivolously.
Rating: Summary: Good idea, but ... Review: It seems to me that the authors are probably getting a bit of cash to promote specific products, since they seemed to praise all of the expensive products on the market. If you are like my husband and me, you cannot afford to buy top of the line products but don't want to compromise your babies safety. On that note, we were looking for practical advice on affordable products. I did enjoy reading through this book to see how the products we had already purchased were rated. Don't get me wrong, the book was helpful in some aspects but for the most part it was just a push to promote overpriced baby products.
Rating: Summary: THIS IS A MUST BUY BOOK Review: Its not very often i dog-ear a book. this is one of the few. this book summarizes everything you need to know about buying baby stuff. this book is great - its real life experience - the authors and the reading public. one of the things you find when you have/adopt a baby is how much stuff you need these days (you wonder how they did it 100 years ago) babies are a BIG BIG business. you can spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars and still need something more. this book pulls together all the information you need - from consumer reports to the american government. you could surf the inernet for hours and still not get all the information that is in this book this is a book about choices. wise choices. if you choose to buy top-of-the-line, at least you do it with your eyes wide open. this book promises to save you money or your money back. while you may not save money at least you make informed choices -an option which is priceless. while i won't say that salespeople cringed when i whipped the book out, i didn't get a lot of bombast from the salespeople. in fact, several shoppers noticed the difference and themselves stopped me to 'look in the book' (when i mentioned a point about a crib, the salesperson looked at the book and grimiced. end of product pitch - i love it) why only 4 stars and not 5. as i made some choices i ran into a lot of roadblocks not mentioned in the book.... i am looking forward to their new book - toddler bargains. oh hurry please !!!
Rating: Summary: Read This Book Before You Buy! Review: This book is great, especially for new parents who haven't experienced the myriad of products in all of the baby stores! I read all of the product reviews before I purchased anything for our new baby. It sure made a difference in my purchases/gift registry. I was not familiar with several of the brands but after reading the review and checking the products myself I believe I made better choices than I would have going in blind.
Rating: Summary: Great resource for parents-to-be Review: I started with the Fields with their Bridal Bargains book, and now moving on to my next life stage, I found their Baby Bargains book to be another winner. I trust their no-nonsense, pro-consumer approach. But I don't necessarily follow them word for word either. For example, I am very pro-cloth-diapers and their bias is very strong. That's OK that we disagree on some matters. Their advice is usually right on target and has helped me save big bucks!
Rating: Summary: Could not live without!! Review: This was the best money that I spent during my pregnancy! Make sure you buy this before you go to register!!!
Rating: Summary: This was my bible! Review: This being my first pregnancy, I knew NOTHING about baby products. This book was referred to me by several people and has been my bible/guide in educating me about everything from furniture to layette. I found that I knew more than the sellers!! Don't buy a thing until you read this book!!
