Summary: Extremely informative
Review: Although I am only in Latin III in high school, this book has given me an edge over the class. It contains important historical dates, the declensions (although in a somewhat odd order), conjugations, almost every Latin word known to man (even the ones my teacher can't pronounce), and some of the more famous Romans in mythology and real life. If you want a clear, concise, portable Latin dictionary, look no further than this.

Summary: Great content, but binding and size could be better
Review: As a high school student studying Latin, I have found this dictionary very useful for some time. The Latin to English and English to Latin sections are divided by a grey leaf grammar section. This is very useful for finding where you are, relative to the end or start of a section.

However, my copy is now in several pieces. The binding and glue used leaves a lot to be desired (though I suppose it could just be that I got a faulty one). It started to fall apart from near the beginning, without rough usage. I wonder if others have experienced the same problem?

Also, at 11cm high and 4cm wide, the size proportions are not the most convenient when you are trying to use it at school and flicking through it, etc. I wonder if HarperCollins could publish an alternative edition, with the same content and format, but more like A5 size?

Summary: Portable!
Review: Collins Gem Latin Dictionary is an excellent choice for anyone interested in Latin. Wether you're a Latin I or a Latin III student it does not matter. This small book measuring 3in by 4 1/2in can fit into almost any pocket & can be carried almost anywhere. These small books were common currency in my Latin class & were highly recommended by the teacher. This Latin Dictionary also proves to be very durable. I once spilled water on the cover & to my surprise it did not leak through. Not only does this dictionary translate Latin-English & English-Latin but in the back of the book is a list of key Roman dates, 7 kings of Rome, cardinal/ordinal/distributive/adverb forms of the numbers, measuring units, money (Greek & Roman), & geographic names. In conclusion this is probably the best Latin dictionary ever published. Again it is very portable, durable, & factual.

Summary: Cogito ergo sum....cogito.
Review: I have to say that the lay-out and accessibility of this dictionary is excellent. You can find all sorts of nice words that you need for a good read of a Pliny or a Plato. Did you know that Plato invented the plate? It's true. That's why he's so famous. Before Plato stepped in people were eating off the floor like stray iguanas. But back to the dictionary...yes, so why are all the words so old? You know, what about "space shuttle", "hard drive", "vacuum clearner" and "ROM"? They just weren't in there and I mean, how are you going to fare when you go to a computer shop in good old Italia and the dictionary doesn't give you words like that? I couldn't even find the word for "parking meter" It isn't as though they are obscure words is it? Anyone would think Latin was a dead language the way some people carry on. I ask you!

Summary: Teacher Recomended, Student Approved
Review: I placed my order today for the Collins Gem Latin Dictionary. Although I have not recieved it yet I have looked through it at school. My Latin teacher has the same dictionary and was ordering them for the Latin II and III classes. I am in Latin I and was not offered the dictionary. Fortunately I ordered it today and saved $5.00 from what she was charging heheheheh! Excellent dictionary! My teacher recomends it and tons of extras you wouldnt excpect in a dictionary!

Summary: A must for students of Latin
Review: I study Greek and Latin and therefore find myself practically buried in dictionaries. The pocket sized Collins Gem however is god send, especially since I commute to school and would rather not have to lug the Chambers Murray (Latin) dictionary around. Not to say that I'm compromising for size here, because from my experience, I've had better luck finding words in the Collins Gem than I've had using Chambers Murray (which is at least four times bigger). However, if you like reading all this background material and would like some references, stick with the more comprehensive guide (Chambers Murray). On the other hand, if you just want to know what the word means (in other words get straight to the point) then look no further than the Collins Gem. I personally was amazed at how comprehensive this little book was, it even includes a mini-review on Latin grammar and verse. Now if only a pocket-sized ancient Greek dictionary that was this good existed, but hey, I guess we can't all have our cake and eat it too.
