Summary: Good book for building the foundation necessary to learn ASL
Review: I used this book in an adult evening course at The American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Connecticut. ASD is the oldest school for deaf people in the US, as well as, the birthplace of American Sign Language(ASL). The book combines both basic sentence struture and useful vocabulary words. An example is Lesson 1, which covers sentences with predictive adjectives and 40 vocabulary words. So at the end of lesson 1, I was able to sign sentences such as She is beautiful. & I am tired.

The book also gives a good introduction into the deaf community and culture. As a parent of a hearing impaired son, this book gave me the ability to see useful results at the end of each lesson. I found this book very effective.

Summary: Great For A Basic Knowledge of ASL
Review: So many people starting to learn ASL do not realize that it isn't simply "English on the hands!" This book shows you the basics of grammar while supplying you with a useful vocabulary. Although this book is wonderful and highly recommended, it is also difficult to handle on your own. If you get this book, I strongly recommend you get the accompanying video set. It's hard to visualize signs by English glosses and the video set will help you. But either way, this is a must-read for any serious signing student. Just keep in mind that you can't learn true ASL from a book or on your own in any way, for that matter.

Summary: excellent for asl acquisition
Review: there are vocab sections and drill sections to learn synax. This is a much better depiction of ASL than the JOY OF SIGNING book. If you want to be able to communicate with deaf people, review this book. I used it for a mid level course when working on an ASL degree. It might be too challenging for a beginner. If you are a beginner, use the Signing Naturally series with videos and suppliment your vocab with the HANDSHAPES DICTIONARY.

Summary: this is a good book
Review: this book contains useful information into the grammer of american sign langage. used in a course with a good teacher, i think and one can inprove their signing skills. maybe someday you sign like a Deaf individual?

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: This provides a good basic understanding of Deaf language.
Review: This book does an overall good job of demonstrating ASL grammar and vocabulary. Sometimes the vocabulary words include English usage without specifying that the particular sign is not used in that manner in ASL. Other than that, it is a very good course, and provides a good understanding of the interaction of facial and body language with the manual signs for complete communication with the Deaf.
