Rating: Summary: albert einstein morphed into jackie susann! brilliant. Review: whoever this zacks guy is, he deserves the Nobel prize. He's made history erotic, amusing, enticing, thought-provoking, and actually worth learning. I couldn't put it down, and neither could my grandmother, who never undressed in front of her husband, which makes Zacks' research all the more compelling. multigenerational appeal.
Rating: Summary: magnificent good fun! Review: At least two "Ohmigawd, I didn't know that!"'s a page, guaranteed. This book is brilliantly, wildly, giddily fun, but it's also a genuine education. Zachs is such a wickedly entertaining raconteur that it's easy to forget the fact that he's also impossibly erudite; no mistake, this is the best, most bent course in Western Civilization sans whitewash you'll ever get between two covers. Cheap at twice the price! I bought 7.
Rating: Summary: Author's Pep Talk Review: I confess. I wrote the book. I spent two years studying hermaphrodites, eunuchs, women who breast-feed puppies, masturbation accidents, popes who make JFK look faithful, and other important under-studied topics. I am also proud to announce that about a third of the book has something to do with sex. And the other two-thirds packs all kinds of strange stories, from the ugly origins of Great American fortunes to Thomas Edison feuding with George Westinghouse over building the first electric chair. If you get a chance, check out my web site But be sure to buy the book from Amazon.com. I hope you enjoy. Don't miss the 200 pictures.
Rating: Summary: A richly entertaining, flesh-and-blood romp through history. Review: FINALLY! "An Underground Education" is a rollicking, ambrosial feast packed full of deliciously naughty, historical facts about popes, inventors, sinners and saints and some truly stupendous pictures! This isn't just a book that blasts cobwebs out of the closet, it's a thrilling Harley-Davidson ride into the past! I couldn't put it down. Richard Zacks, with immense charm and wit, happily drags the reader back in time-- engaging all of one's senses-- fleshing out the cracked, brittle bones of history, and making the blood of history flow red, warm and gritty again! The extensive research is impressive, as the author gleefully bounces from one grotesque photo, to yet another hysterically funny, or profane, historical anecdote. I loved this brilliantly entertaining book so much, it's on the very TOP of my holiday gift list!
Rating: Summary: A terrific compilation of amazing, little known facts... Review: This is just an amazing book! Filled with weird, wonderful and astounding facts, factoids, and fact-ettes of the highest order. The stunning quality and quantity of true weirdness the author has managed to dig up is absolutely mind-boggling...And that doesn't even include the bizarre photos...Zacks deserves kudos...

Rating: Summary: THINGS I NEVER KNEW, I NEVER KNEW. Review:
I FIRST BROUGHT THIS BOOK BACK IN 1999. I DIDN'T BUY IT FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN I LIKED THE COVER! BUT MAN, ONCE I OPENED AND STARTED TO READ I COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT I'VE BEEN MISSING OUT ON SOME GREAT FACT OF THE WORLD TO DAY. EVERYONE MUST OWN A COPY!!!!
Rating: Summary: This is a stellar, stellar book, just... Review: ...be warned. If you're like me, you've read the reviews and you can think of half a dozen people you would like to buy "An Underground Education" for as a present. How perfect for Larry, John, and Dad.
Well, maybe not Dad. I had intended to buy this for my father as a Christmas present, but when I received my copy, I realised that there was a problem. "An Ungerground Education" is littered with photographs. There are castrated men (full frontal) & lots of early porn and all sorts of other fascinating and freaky things. It's all very interesting, except that I cannot even begin to imagine giving it to my father... It's still a good read, though, and I highly recommend it. Just not as a gift for ol' Dad.
Rating: Summary: A page turner Review: This book has kept me up for three nights because I can't put it down. It has something for everyone. I wasn't totally interested in the business section, (not my thing) but there's so much more to the book it didn't matter. Sacks references to other books in his book got me to order two more books from Amazon to further my "education" on certain subjects. Wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: Granted, as basic human being, I can see someone, and myself loving this book mearly because of it's scandalous nature. Scandal, that is what Underground Education really is all about, but how fascinating a read it is, scandal and all.
I literally read it through with in a day. I have went back to it many times since. Some accounts, I'll give, seem a little Hokey, if you will, but the book is well worth the price. I highly recommend it. You will likely not find a book with more non standard information. I used many excerpts from the book for a college class lecture.
