Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I found myself understanding bits and pieces of spanish conversations on the street after only the first 4 tapes. My one complaint is that for the price they could probably have included 2 more cassettes with this set. As it is you only get 4 hours of instruction.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Review: I found these tapes to be extremely helpful esp. in getting over the fear that I could not learn a language or pronounce one either. I look forward to getting started on Pimsleurs Spanish One.
Rating: Summary: Great As A Supplement Review: I got this book out of the library, and now I want to get Pimsluer Spanish 1. I found it very good as a supplement to my high-school Spanish learning. It helps with pronunciation, fluency, and thinking in Spanish. It only takes 30 minutes, so it is a wonderfull study tool. I also find it more interesting than flash cards. I am biased against "learn to speak quick" courses because they usually aren't very thourough, but this one surprised me.
Rating: Summary: Be careful what you ask for Review: I like the Pimsleur system, it works well, is easy to use. This particular "Quick & Simple" version consists of only 4 tapes, just enough to let you decide you want to learn more Spanish, so you can buy the more complete Spanish I. If you are going on a trip and want to learn travel Spanish, get the Conversation version by Pimsleur, which has 16 lessons and will do much better. Some of the reviews for this Quick & Simple version were originally reviews for a longer version that is now discontinued, and they were transfered to this less than filling version. The version that was discontinured was replaced later by the Converstional version. The Pimsleur system works well, this version is just a light sampling of the language to see if you want to go further.

Rating: Summary: Excellent way to learn Spanish! Review: I tried both this and Berlitz Rush Hour (the music course). I am having great success with this Pimsleur and plan to purchase the full Spanish 1 course next. The courses are clearly organized and re-inforce learning. The speaker is clear and emphasizes pronunciation giving you ample opportunity to practice. There are two speakers, male and female, so you hear two different intonations of everything. If I must be critical (and I feel I must :) it would be that you should understand that you are learning the 'Spain' dialect of Spanish so your language will be the 'formal' Spanish rather than the 'street' Spanish. However, I would prefer to learn with CORRECT accents and pronunciations first, and I can incorporate 'slang' and local dialects later. Contrast this to the Thomas course, where reviewers state that the accent is Swiss (?I believe, NOT Spanish anyway). Overall, this course meets my objective of allowing me to learn Spanish during my daily commute with zero book time. Very effective. Update: Since I wrote this I bought the full Pimsleur and am about to begin Spanish III. I'm very happy with it. Read my List and Guide for more info.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I very much recommend this resource. Particularly to those who may only need a little Spanish for travelling purposes. This set has just a few CDs, but they are very good and easy to listen to. I took Spanish for a few years in school, but theses CDs have really helped me renew what I learned and of course taught me many new things. I'm sure the complete set is breath taking.
Rating: Summary: Quite Effective and Fun Review: I was astonished at how well this method worked for me. During my dreadful Seattle commute, I thoroughly enjoyed progressing through these lessons. I listened to them at home and my four year old started participating in the lessons and learning the phrases. That was especially sweet! Be aware that this package is a teaser - it introduces you to the method and encourages you to go on with the more expen$ive subsequent lessons, which I plan to do as soon as Dubya sends me a tax rebate. At the conclusion of these eight lessons, you will NOT be qualified to be ambassador to Paraguay. However, you will know how to order beer and inquire about the location of the bathroom. Arguably, the latter capabilities are far more useful than the former.
Rating: Summary: Language for your ears only! Review: I was intrigued by their slogan of "how you learned your native language". It made sense. I didn't pick up an "english" book until 10. So I tried the Spanish. The Basic program I tried had only 4 cassettes and 8 lessons but I will quickly move on to the Comprehensives. Played it in the car, practiced, repeated and they only want you to do 30 minutes at a time! Well, IT WORKED! Used some phrases and sentences on my sister-in-law and she thought I was speaking like a local.
Rating: Summary: a few tips Review: I'm currently using Pimsleur to learn Japanese and Cantonese, and I'm thrilled with my progress. Pimsleur has a truly effective system for learning language painlessly and effectively. I've noticed, though, that (some) people say they needed to listen to each tape 4-5 times before they felt they knew the material. Fortunately, that's not necessary. Here's how to make equal progress on just one listening: Each time you're prompted to come up with an answer on your own, *stop the tape* and give yourself time to think before you get interrupted by the soundtrack. If the tape gives you the answer before you've come up with an answer yourself, you haven't learned anything. Also, as much as I love Pimsleur courses, they're still wildly expensive, even with (...) sometimes-substantial discounts. (...)
