Summary: large and larger
Review: I bought this book along with two other to start learning portugese. one i use alot is "say it in portugese brazilian usage". this book though is physiclly huge. it is thick and the page size is quite huge. it does have alot of verbs and if you need to find out how the verb conjugations look it is a great book. but it doesnt give real examples for each conjugation. leaving you wondering how each conjugation works. there are alot of conjugations and forms in portugese and there is no real way to learn portugese without buying a book like this. i just wished they explained with some example sentences for each conjugation. there was plenty of space provided.

Summary: Didn't like it
Review: I didn't like this book one bit. I found it difficult to use and confusing. Even my Portuguese tutor had trouble with it. I would say skip it. Go for a course book instead.

Summary: I have to agree with Gozador de musica's review
Review: I give it 5 stars based on its thoroughness
with respect to verb conjugations.
However, unlike the spanish and french books,
which I also have,
the portuguese book seems almost like a rush job.
It lacks the deeper explanation of certain concepts
and I also miss the guided phrases that
are included in the other versions.
The french and spanish verb books have situational
phrases included at the end with fairly accurate
pronunciation guides. The Portuguese book has nothing
but a few sample phrases to go with each verb.

Nonetheless, if you're serious about language,
this is a good book to have
because it definitely addresses all issues you
may have regarding verb conjugations.

Summary: Not what I expected
Review: I hoped it would list verbs in English, such as WALK, then list translations for "he walks", "she walks", "we walk" etc. Instead you need to know the verb in Portuguese to look it up, then conjugations are listed under subheadings such as Personal Infinitive, Future Perfect Subjunctive and Pluperfect Indicative (what the deuce is that?). I'll need to send this back because it's of no use to me.

Summary: Helpful, though not all necessary...
Review: I used this book in preparation for my two-year stay in Brasil. I found the book well set-up and easy to use, but often times it was unnecessary. In Portuguese, as in all Romance languages, all verbs have conjugation rules. Yet at least 90% of Portuguese verbs follow these simple-to-learn, universal rules. And even most of the irregular verbs are conjugated by certain "irregular rules." After learning the grammatical conjugation rules (which the book strangely omits), I only needed to look up 5 irregular verbs during my whole stay for reference. The one thing that I thoroughly enjoyed was the beginning outline of verb moods and tenses. This was very useful and served to give a clearer picture of the Portuguese grammatical verb structure. So for what the book sets out to do, it does well. I simply did not find it useful, necessary, or worth the money as I learned Portuguese.

Summary: The Most Helpful Book for Portuguese Verbs
Review: I'm studying the Portuguese language with a private tutor and this book helps a lot. I used to spend time writing down all the possible verb conjugations; thanks to this book, I saved a lot of time writing notes. This book is well-organized and focused only on verbs.

Summary: You Need this Book to Master Portuguese
Review: Studying verb tables is an exercise you must perform in order to become truly functional in Portuguese. Although most Portuguese textbooks contain verb conjugations scattered throughout various chapters, you still need a book like this; and I know of no other publication that contains such a complete collection of Portuguese verbs, their conjugations, and their ranges of use.

It seems that many students of Portuguese come to the language after having first studied Spanish. Since Spanish and Portuguese share so much vocabulary, these students often have a tendency to skimp on Portuguese verb study. I have met a number of native English-speakers who have never become truly fluent in Portuguese because they are able to get by on a mishmash of Portuguese vocabulary and Spanish grammar. This habit grates on the ears of native Portuguese speakers, and this book can help you avoid such mistakes.

When you first open 501 Portuguese Verbs, it can at first be a bit overwhelming. The best way to use this volume is to focus on the conjugations of one or two verbs each day. After a while, you will begin to notice the patterns that emerge, and Portuguese verbs will become less intimidating. (However, Portuguese verbs are generally more difficult to learn than Spanish verbs.)

The authors have also included three or four example sentences on each page, which will give you greater insights into Portuguese syntax and usage rules.

This is more or less a must-have item if you are serious about learning Portuguese.

Summary: Excellent Book
Review: This book is a must have for Portuguese language learners. It's easy to follow. Although it doesn't have all the Portuguese words (falar is one) it still is a great tool. I still use it today in my Portuguese classes. I consider this book as my bible. I also have Russian, Spanish, and German Verbs and each one is excellent!

Summary: Excellent reference book
Review: This book is excellent for verb tables. It gives you practically all the endings you need. It is very thorough and competent. It has been my main pillar in the learning of Portuguese together with the Prista grammar. For courses I really like the Living Language Portuguese. Manuela Cook's courses are also very good.
