Rating: Summary: a more realistic review Review: To begin, let me say that I really like this dictionary. The print is large enough to read; it's a good value for an unabridged dictionary; it's much more current than my parents' dictionary from the 1960s; and I have been known to sit and read it for long stretches. However, though it is a 1996 dictionary, it is somewhat lacking in current terms. For example, and perhaps I am alone here, I would not think to look up "e-mail" under "electronic mail." A "drag queen" is not exactly the same as "a male transvestite." "Transgender" is not in the dictionary at all. I am sure there were other words I looked up, or tried to, which disappointed me. Altogether, I would say that this book is perfect for a bright high schooler, but if you're an older fan of words, look for a more complete and current dictionary.
Rating: Summary: Simply wonderful! Review: Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language is an indispensable tool since it helps in many different areas, i.e., with the spelling of a word, the history of a word to name a few examples. I have always wanted an unabridged dictionary and to imagine that I only needed to spend $20.
Rating: Summary: Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary Review: Whether you are looking to add to your collection or simply seeking a great dictionary at an affordable price, the Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary is the one English language dictionary that everyone who reads, writes or loves words should own a copy of. It is among the most prized and by far most utilized dictionary of my own collection, never far from arms reach when I am writing. This book at five times the price would be a worthwhile investment. Priced as it is, there can be no reason for not owning at least one copy of such a wonderful dictionary. My only suggestion, invest it in a good book stand. It will save both the book and your biceps.
