Summary: Yeah, it's that good
Review: Once a book receives a 5-star, it might seem silly to keep jumping on the dogpile of rave reviews. But I just had to say that I am sooo glad that I took the advice of other reviewers and started my Arabic studies with this book. There is no telling how much frustration it has already saved me.

The Amazon.com system for allowing normal folks to give feedback really helps all of us to make better buying decisions if we just take the time to give that feedback.

Summary: Review from a self-taught/teaching Arabic novice.
Review: Over the course of about four months, I have read through this book twice: the first time to get a feel for the alphabet, the second time to confirm my understanding and to really try to write it.

I found 36 errors ranging from minor typesetting errors to missing diacritical marks and letters being used that were not previously presented. The sample from the Qu'ran was especially poor. The errors could easily be corrected by producing a revised edition.

Most of the letters are "standard" in so far as I could go to the BBC Arabic Service web site... and "read" the documents.

The biggest drawback to the book is that it is static. Learning an alphabet, how to write the script and pronounce the letters, is an inherently dynamic process. There needs to be a multimedia approach to learning the alphabet that overcomes these limitations. The technology is there; someone just needs to do it. Perhaps one day soon...

In spite of the shortcomings, I would recommend this book to the self-teaching beginner. I continue to use it in review and verification.

Summary: Simple and direct
Review: There is only one way to put it, if you want to learn the Arabic alphabet and the rules associated with it, then this is the book for you. It is simple to understand, direct, and concise. It's not a long book and anyone can follow the author's writing style. Again, if your goal is to learn the Arabic alphabet and script, buy this book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Provides good understanding of a tough subject
Review: This book gives good coverage on the history of the written language and how regional differences affect the written language. The book gives a great level of detail and good examples on how to reading, writing, forming words, and the different forms each letter can take as well as examples of how to prounounce each letter.
