Review: After comparing almost every Spanish/English "unabridged" or reference dictionary available, this is no doubt the best, most comprehensive, useful and well organized that I have seen. Every serious student of spanish should have one.

Summary: Best on Spanish-English Dictyionary on Market!
Review: Harper-Collins has produced the best, most organized dictionary of the Spanish language out on the market. Excellent organization, classification, and regional distinctions (eg. where words are used among the various Spanish speaking nations of the world) has made Harper-Collins' dictionary series the best. Oxford, Larousse, and Penguin's dictionaries can't meet the organizational and thoughful research the Harper-Collins staff has done. This dictionary is worth every penny!

Review: I am very impressed with the scope of this dictionary. It provides sample phrases, lists the variations in meaning by country or region, and has a terrific set of appendices including sample business letters. I recommend it to all of my students.

Summary: Easily the best Spanish pocket dictionary on the market
Review: I can not take my 2000 page dictionary to Spanish class everyday, so I had to find a good replacement. I believe that the Harpercollins dictionary is just that. The font size is just right for me along with the easy to follow definitions. The only possible drawback is that sometimes definitions are only applicable to certain Spanish speaking countries. This however is something that will probably never be able to be solved, especially when dealing with a pocket sized dictionary. However, for general everyday use, this is a must buy.

Review: I guess this dictionary is OK for elementary school students. The entries are too naive, almost childish. I felt that it was by far too unpractical, often not useful at all. They don't include significantly used slang or informal language. I you are a native spanish speaker (like me) planning to read a book in english and look for the words you don't understand, definitely don't buy this one.

Summary: Real Down-to-Earth Dictionary
Review: I personally liked the HarperCollins Spanish Dictionary because it translates words that I have unsuccessfully tried to find in other dictionaries. I am trying to learn to speak Spanish fluently using the LearningSpanishLikeCrazy.com course. And there were certain words used in the bonus lessons to the LearningSpanishLikeCrazy.com course that I was unable to find in other dictionaries but I found them in HarperCollins Spanish dictionary.
For example, I learned the word "guagua" in Learning Spanish Like Crazy and learned that it meant bus, and I also learned the word "autobus" from Learning Spanish Like Crazy and learned that many Spanish-speakers use the word "autobus" for bus. The Harper Collins Spanish Dictionary explained the regional differences so that I would know to use "guagua" among Cubans, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, and to use "autobus" around other Latin Americans.

Summary: Costa Rica
Review: I went to Costa Rica this summer and lives in a village for a month, no one in the town spoke even a little bit of english. This book definately helped me get through the experience and teach the children english. I do not have this book any more because I gave it to my favorite spanish student who always want to learn more English vocabulary, I hope that he can understand it.

Summary: Great Dictionary!
Review: I'm studying for my doctorate in Spanish Literature so by this one can note that I've been using and going through a slew of Spanish dictionaries for many, many years. This dictionary is the best one I've ever used for many reasons.For one, I'm referring to the 'hardcover' edition. It's so wonderful to be able to open the book to a specific page, and have the book lay down flat without my having to keep one hand opening the dictionary and one hand opening my book. This is a small and frivolous detail, but when having to read dialectal Spanish from the Caribbean or Old Spanish, one must constantly refer to the dictionary. Having a dictionary that lies flat when opened is a tremendous help. Secondly, it's indispensable if you are reading literature from other Spanish speaking countries apart from Mexico and Spain. I've found Cubanismos that I've never found in other dictionaries -- this saves valuable time from having second rate dictionaries and having to look for these obscure words on the internet. In the middle of the dictionary is a comprehensive grammar and communication guide in Spanish and English. Everything from a clear explanation of key grammar points to standard models for everyday correspondence, resumes, invitations and email. It's an investment, it's expensive, but it's well worth the price. Concerning the comment of a reviewer never having heard the /ll/ pronounced as /li/ as in "¿Cómo te 'liamas'?", this pronunciation can be heard among many speakers of Argentina, I've heard it myself from an older Argentine woman who taught this pronunciation to the students she instructed in Spanish. This serves as additional proof of how thorough and complete this splendid tome is.
