Summary: Detailed Excellence in Preparing from every angle
Review: I purchased Sternberg's (Barron's) as well as Michelle Spence's (Cliff's) Miller Analogies Test Preparation Guide -- probably overkill -- but I studied both thoroughly and got a very high score. It was worth it! I have a hunch that Sternberg would help more in the middle score ranges and perhaps Spence in the higher more difficult analogies. I thought Sternberg offered many detailed pointers (outstanding for their clarity and helpfulness) not only about the analogies, but also about every angle of preparing for the test. Spence was somewhat more abstract, often leaving me unsatisfied that I understood her logic. If I had to choose only one, I would buy Sternberg. (I also bought and enjoyed his book, Successful Intelligence.) Nonetheless, I think Spence probably added to my score at the top. When I finished the actual test, I felt I had not done as well as I had on the practice tests in either of the preparation books, but actually I had scored higher than nearly all my scores on the practice tests. Sternberg is worth studying!

Summary: I'm Changing to 5 Stars!
Review: I scored in the 95th percentile (raw score 79) on the MAT using this book as preparation. Now, either I'm a genius or this is a very good guide (there is no evidence of the former). Get this specific book before the MAT.

Summary: Good book!
Review: I strongly recommend purchasing this book. The lists in the back helped me review well. The practice tests in the book were harder than the actual test, so I felt good when I left the testing center.

Summary: Great help
Review: I used this as one of two books to help me prepare for the test. I found this book to be useful with its lists and practice tests. I scored an 83 raw score with a 98 percentile rank for my degree category. This book was a great help.

Summary: Good Study Guide
Review: I used this book to prepare for the M.A.T. and it really helped me. I can directly attribute 5 points of my raw score to using this guide. One of the questions was exactly the same as on one of the pretests and the others were things that I wouldn't have refreshed my memory on if I hadn't seen them on the practice exams(Roman numerals and the Greek alphabet). I can't calculate how much better I did as a result of being familiar with the test format and types of word play questions that were on the test but this also undoubtably improved my grade. I ended up in the 94 percentile and I think this book got me into the 90th percentiles. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Confidence Booster
Review: I was a little nervous facing a grad school admission test after so long out of school, but the reviews on Amazon were pretty positive about this particular text. I found the pretest to be by far the hardest test in the book, and became more comfortable with the format and the analysis with each additional practice test. Ultimately, I improved my score from the pretest to the actual test by 25 raw points. Practice in spotting different forms that an analogy might take was extremely helpful to me. I finished the actual test well within the time limit, and scored > 95th %ile.

Summary: I scored in the 96th percentile.
Review: I was able to improve my score by at least twlve points. Read the book, study the vocabulary, and brush up on your humanities and you will probably improve your score. I would also recommend purchasing other MAT test prep books for the tests. Barron's however offered a great strategy for taking the test. The vocabulary list was also great help.

Summary: Puts MAT in Perspective
Review: If you're planning to take the MAT -- plan on buying this study guide along with "Word Power Made Easy."

Without these resources, I would not have scored in the 80th percentile. Baron's made the difference.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Barron's will prepare you for the format of the MAT, but....
Review: in terms of content, nothing can supplant a strong familiarity with Western Civ. I would heartily recommend Jackson Spielvogel's "Western Civilization" in one volume as the ultimate prep book for the MAT. A working knowledge of Latin and Greek would also be invaluable for scoring above the curve. Don't be misled by some reviews; there is nothing banal or trite about the MAT. The MAT is a standardized IQ test and if you would like to use it as a measure here are the standardizations: 66 places you in the 98% percentile for the general population (IQ 132), 85 places you in the 99.9% (IQ 148+)

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Average Book
Review: It can only build on the knowledge that you have gained in your life. If you're thinking of getting a high score on the test, solely by using this book. It will not do.
