Rating: Summary: obsolete, not really usable Review: I picked up this book when I began a degree in ASL. I thought it would give me some kind of head start. There are a couple signs in there that you might look up one day, but you could easily find them on the net. I am no expert in ASL Lingusitics, but I assure you, I know deaf people aren't using this book or recommending it. It is a dinosaur. The progressive ASL books would be the ones currently being published by DAWN SIGN PRESS and GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY PRESS. They, would be the experts in this field- the people who sign 24/7. Spend the money elsewhere. Videos for DSP and GUP are also better than others.

Rating: Summary: The Joy Of Signing Review: I really like this book. I think it is a great resource for anyone interested in sign language.
Rating: Summary: Great book for beginners Review: I think this is a great book for anyone who wants to learn the meaning of different signs. The only drawback is that it doesn't teach phrases that one could use on a daily basis.
Rating: Summary: This book is not current Review: I was asked to purchase this book as a text for a SIGNING class at a local education center. The class was taught by a totally deaf woman who has used this book as the primary textbook for 10 years. She admitted during class that it was the best book available then but there may be better text available now. Before you buy, make sure you read all reviews and understand the difference between basic signing and ASL. They are not the same and if you try to communicate with a deaf person who has learned ASL, they may not understand you.
Rating: Summary: The Joy of Signing Review: I've used this book for 10 years for myself and to teach from and find it well organized, precise and very easy to use. It's a book I turn to frequently and recommend it to anyone wanting to learn sign.
Rating: Summary: Very Good, But Slightly Outdated Review: If you're like most beginning sign language students, you've heard the praises of "The Joy Of Signing." Most of those praises are well deserved, however, there are some cautions to be aware of.If you are looking to learn American Sign Language (the natural language of Deaf Americans), this book does not teach that. This is simply a dictionary with extended notes. It is separated into categories (as opposed to alphabetical) with memory aids, but the illustrations are not really helpful and it doesn't teach to distinguish between ASL and English signing. It also has outdated signs, such as for "Man" and "Woman." If you're interested in learning some basic sign vocabulary, this Deafie's advice is to look elsewhere. If you're looking to learn ASL, you MUST look elsewhere. However, if you have a good grasp of the basics and are looking for a different perspective, "The Joy of Signing" is probably a good buy for you! Good luck! :o)
Rating: Summary: it good Review: it's a nice book to always have around when you "forget" a word or two. The problem is I wished that they could've put the words in order by the alphebet. That way, I feel as if it's so much easier.
Rating: Summary: This is a very good book, wish it had more signs. Review: Joy of signing is very good, for someone like me, who is trying to learn more signs. Only thing is, i wish it could cover all the sign that the hearing impaired uses. I find myself using it as a cross reference to other books. To sum it all up this book has helped me a lot and contuines to help. Thank you for writing this book.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book for beginners Review: Our church has recently started a Deaf Ministry of which I am involved. I purchased this book to help in learning new signs. I found that a few of the signs are slightly different than what I had originally learned, but it was still a great help to me. The illustrations were easy to understand and the descriptions are very helpful. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about speaking to the deaf.
