Summary: Good enough for a pocket dictionary
Review: Collins English-Portuguese Portuguese-English dictionaries are in general quite good. You can not expect much from the 'Gem' dictionary, but it does the job adequately. Much better is the next size up. Both cater for both European and Brazilian Portuguese, which is a strong point. In this they are comparable to Nitti and Ferreira's 5001 verbs book and Manuela Cook's Portuguese course, in particular the new one, 2002, Hodder & Stoughton Teach Yourself books. They form a trio I would recommend to anyone interested in knowing a Portuguese you can use anywhere in the Portuguese speaking world.

Summary: The only English<->Portuguese dictionary worth owning
Review: Collins makes great pocket dictionaries. They have a handheld version of their Spanish Pocket Gem that sets the bar for handheld dictionaries, so buying the Portuguese Pocket Gem (paperback) was a no-brainer.It lists colloquialism, slang, pejoratives, sets important words off from others with bolding, has verb tables in the back, has a pronounciation guide for both Continental and Brazilian Portuguese as well as English (so Portuguese speakers can find the book useful as well), and so much more. The translations and definitions are very accurate and extremely helpful, and the pronounciation of each word is essential to students of either language. An exemplary representative of the Gem dictionary series.

Summary: Lots of words and definitions, great price!
Review: I was quite impressed by this tiny dictionary. I am currently in 4th semester Portuguese at a university, and so far this dictionary has been all I needed. Unlike some dictionaries that privide only one definition for the word, this one gives the commonly used synonyms as well (in both English and Portuguese). You can't go wrong for the price!

Summary: perfect travel dictionary
Review: if your plan is to buy a dictionary for studying portuguese, i would buy something a little bit more thorough, but the collins gem is the perfect size for taking on a trip (tiny!) and is the best on the market in this class... during my travels in portugal and brazil, it was a great aid, and i even found lots of unusual words that i didn't expect of a dictionary like this (including the most common brazilian colloquial words that a lot of dictionaries just leave out due to academic snobbery, but which are essential for basic understanding)... the size is unbeatable since it will even fit in your pocket, the pronunciation guide is perfect (though it's in brazilian if that is important to you), variants for portugal are given when needed, and irregular verbs are given in a table at the end...what else could you ask of such a small little dictionary!

Review: Not bad for pocket dictionary.
Notice the absence of some words due to its compact size.
Never understood how people are able to figure out how to pronounce words using a dictionary, thus don't be surprise if your pronunciation doesn't make you pass for a Brazilian. As a Portuguese speaker myself, I judge this little book can be some help for those that don't have the disposition to carry an encyclopedia collection in their backpack.

Review: This dictionary has two major virtues: (a) it is really small, (b) it's not paperback, but rather "plasticback": the jacket is of a reasonably resistant plastic material. I haven't found any dictionary of similar size that is as solid. Thus, this is the dictionary I take in my travel backpack. I haven't really pondered whether it's as good as the alternatives in terms of entries and such; but I just don't have to worry as much about its getting destroyed in transit.
