Summary: If you don't love this book, you don't understand it.
Review: Southwest's simple approach is so complex it took Tom Peter's two looks to understand it. This is probably the best run company in the world and seems to get better as it gets bigger. Watch out these guys are just getting started. This is a must read for anyone who aspires to own/operate/manage in a company that cares period.

Summary: A Special Workforce of Nuts
Review: Southwest's very non-formal, non-traditional, non-business way of doing business. How do you turn a profit in an industry that has never turned a profit but is vital to our economy? The answer is different from every other company in the industry. This book is a must read for anyone who is in charge of projects or people. Southwest encourages creativity and is the most flexible company in the airline industry which alows them to adapt to situations much like their pasenger turn around time, record breaking. Of course it helps when your employees literally luv their work.

Summary: Some good observations, too much boosterism.
Review: SWA is clearly a reamrkable company and the authors manage to communicate that and the reasons why in the first 50 pages. After that it's basically self-promoting, sentimental fluff. You may find yourself rapidly skimming more than 3/4 of this book.

Summary: Words about LUV
Review: That is right too much praising, too much mushy stuff, too long, but still is a great book. Great company, maybe the best way of doing business - service to customer (great service), fun to employees, profits for shareholders! (Some chapters really can be skipped or just skimmed)

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Too long and repetitive
Review: The book is great but loses it by repeating itself. If they took out a third to a half it would be a racy wonderful read but it becomes cumbersome and you tend to leave out sections. The whole story is so uplifting and fantastic that it deserves a better shorter version.

Summary: A Nice Overview of a Great Airline
Review: This book does provide a nice overview of what is probably the greatest success story in the airline industry. The thing is, I wish the authors had dug a lot deeper. Other airlines have been jealous of Southwest's success and its relationship with its customers and employees for years. And no noe seems ot be able to get to the bottom line of what they do oprationally and financially that makes them a success. Maybe there is nothing more, it's all just a matter of oeprating efficiently and keeping employess and customers happy.

In fact, many start-up airlines now use Southwest as their template for operating. The authors do a good job of reviewing the history of the company (at least up to the point of publication) and discussing the operations of the airline, but they just don't seem to dig deep enough. Maybe what is needed is someone with a strong financial background to do a comparison of Southwest's methods directly with those of its competitors, because I would really like to see the difference from a financial analysis standpoint (then again, that might be an awfully boring book).

My only other negative criticism of the book is that it almost turns into a fluff piece, cheerleading a little too heavily for Southwest. But that is almost understandable. After all, Southwest has rarely made a misstep in all its years of operations.

Regardless, this is a very good look at a truly wonderful operation. Well worth reading if you have an interest in the airline industry.

Review: This book gives the reader a strong insight into Southwest Airlines and a good view of management's philosophy. This is a good book for both the business student and the airlines buff.
