Rating: Summary: The only thing I needed-- raised score 8 points in 6 weeks! Review: I bought this and the book of 10 real LSATs (the combo they offer). I worked hard for 6 weeks, using this book during the week for an hour or two M-Th, and I took practice LSATs on the weekends (normally 2 of them, one Sat and one Sun) and my test score was over 170... My practice test scores just kept rising each weekend, and I know this book is to thank for it. It doesn't talk down to you (like Princeton and Kaplan tend to), and the writers seem to really be "in the heads" of the test creators. Emphasis is placed exactly where you need it: timing, confidence, focus. The organizational techniques that they teach for the logic games are excellent.I have recommended this book to every aspiring law student I know and will continue to do so.
Rating: Summary: YOU are the ultimate master Review: ... This book is not the end-all-be-all under no circumstance. I must agree the games section is great. It does tend to venture into areas not touched on the real LSAT but if you are also using 10 Real LSATS you will get a feel for which games you do not have to prepare for. I got nothing from the arguement and reading comprehension sections. IN a nutshell: This book does surpass the other LSAT books that are on the market by far, however, in order to truly master the LSAT please enroll in a prep class, do all of the exams in 10 Real LSATS and use this book as a reference guide. By using the above formula you will have no choice other than to succeed. Good Luck.
Rating: Summary: forget the rest Review: Forget the other study guides on the market, this one and the released actual LSATs from LSAC are all you need. That's all I needed to score a 163. The games section is the most helpful, and better than the other guides I looked at before buying. I completed 18 of the 24 questions, with 3 wrong answers. Great advice on getting this highly timed section done, and done correctly. All you need to know is in the logical reasoning section. Basic logic. The one thing I disagree with, is the book not recommending reading the question stems before the stimulus. But they say doing so may work for you, they just don't recommend it. I found it helpful and time saving to read the stem (and ONLY the stem, not the answer choices!) before the stimulus, because I found myself rereading the stimulus to identify the answer from the choices. If it works for you, read the stem first to know what to look for in the stimulus. Saves time. I finished both logic reasoning sections with 10 minutes to spare. The reading comprehension section is solid, but it didn't help me much because I'm very strong in this area. Other test takers I talked to said they benefited greatly from the strategies presented. This book is no nonsense. It tells you what you need to know to answer the questions, and doesn't try to sell you on any gimmicks. There aren't any magic tricks to get you a 180 on the LSAT. This book will give you the strategies and knowledge to work a good test. Best of luck!
Rating: Summary: Adds to the confusion Review: I have found that the authors contradict themselves on several points, and they tend to assume a lot. Also the book is not worded as clearly as it could be. Reading this book became an exercise in frustration.
Rating: Summary: Best one of the lot Review: I have purchased almost all of the review books out there and found this one to be the most concise and useful. (I specifically thank these authors for my score.) Others are great, but this one gives cut and dry, take it or leave it info that was very helpful, at least for my learning style. If you buy only 1 LSAT book, make sure it is this one. I would, however, recommend using at least a few different review materials from different authors to get your perspective together.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book to use to improve your score Review: I read this book cover to cover in a week. I tried to learn what tricks I need to know using other books and could not break a 150 on my practice test. I reading this book I broke 160. I kept practicing using what I had learned and have continued to improve my score. The book is wonderful because it is broken up by sections according to what you should expect to see on the exam. He is even honest enough about not all people having a number of weeks to study so he gives a short cut version (but it really is not taxing to try to read the whole book and you should be able to read the whole book in a week if you sit down for three hours a day). It also taught me to stop looking for the tricks because there really aren't any and to just understand the structure of the questions and to attack it that way. The writer is also honest about the fact that there is no one way for all people to answer the questions and that you must learn how to answer it in the way that works best for you. THERE ARE A LOT OF BOOKS OUT THERE THAT CLAIM TO HELP YOU IMPROVE, I HAVE READ SIX OTHER BOOKS (BY KAPLAN AND BARRONS) AND THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK THAT I WOULD RECOMEND.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic LSAT Prep Book -- No Gimmicks Review: This is a great LSAT prep book. The first time I took an LSAT practice test I got a 169. So my problem wasn't figuring out how to do the problems. My problem was feeling rushed into making decisions on answers that I wasn't completely sure about. One thing that this book does extremely well is give you ways to answer the easy to medium questions much faster than you normally could otherwise, thus giving you extra time to figure out the more complicated ones. And the best part about this book is it isn't full of gimmicky ways to "beat" the test like some other books. It teaches you how to best take the test to maximize your opportunities for a higher score. For people who have absolutely no experience with the LSAT, this is perhaps an even better book for their needs than for those of us who kind of know what's going on already. It is very in depth with explanations for every question asked in the entire book. I would buy this book, prepare for the test by going through it entirely, and then take a few real LSATs to get your timing down.
Rating: Summary: Currently the Best LSAT Book On the Market!!! Review: If you've read the other reviews, you already know that this book is in a class of its own. Nova's "Master the LSAT" is simply the best book on the market right now, way ahead of the competition. Before using this book, I also went through Princeton Review's "Cracking the LSAT 2002" and "Kaplan LSAT 2001." Both books helped me only slightly. It seemed that both books devoted more pages to practice tests and explaining the answers on those tests. However, with "Master the LSAT" the difference is very noticeable. This book devotes so many pages to teaching you the material: the section on games is very long and thorough, the section on arguments is extremely insightful, and the reading section offers practical methods for success. The only thing not covered is the writing section (which isn't part of your score, and something most test takers do not spend much time studying). Anyway, my score has improved form the low 150s to the mid 160s now. Of course, this is due to the amount of time I have spent studying the strategies in this wonderful book. ** In addition to this book, LSAT takers should also buy the "10 Actual LSATs" for real practice. However, it is imperative that you buy this book for strategies.
Rating: Summary: Don't order the ebook... Review: Don't order the ebook version of "Master the LSAT." I ordered it over a week ago, and have had countless problems with the download process. I still haven't been able to access the ebook, and lost a week of study time. The digital support department has been anything but supportive. Save yourself the headache. Master the LSAT may very well be a great LSAT prep book - I'll let you know when I get the hardcopy from B & N....
Rating: Summary: Thank You _Nova's Master the LSAT!_ Review: Using the course of study suggested in this book, I was able to achieve a competitve score for admission into each of my law school choices, including #7 ranked University of Michigan. If I had to take the LSAT over again, I wouldn't do it without a review of this book. Kolby and Thornburg use a practical approach to answering tricky analytical reasoning questions, or "games" which was easy to understand, and really made the difference in my LSAT score. If you have six weeks before your scheduled LSAT, I would highly recommend spending the time and money on this valuable study tool.
