Summary: It really works
Review: It truly did work for me -- I read twice as fast as before I took the course! How? By point out bad habits I'd developed (e.g., subvocalization) and giving me exercises to correct them.

So, what about comprehension and retention? I actually think mine are better than before. Not only am I reading more and enjoying it more, I've learned to adjust my pace according to what I'm reading. Not everything should be read for speed, and formulating a plan in advance is an important part of the program. While I wouldn't read poetry this way, I have been able to increase the quantity of material I read in newspapers, technical, and business publications.

Finally, I was delighted to find the book relatively free of the nonsense I normally expect to see in self-help books.

Summary: I highly recommend the course book and CD!
Review: Power Reading really works! I didn't think it was possible but after taking the "Power Reading" course, I raised my speed by 150% and increased my comprehension too. The course is very well written and constructed in a way that makes absolute sense to the reader.

I found the CD very helpful in that I didn't have to "distract" myself from the reading drills (which are throughout the book) by stopping my reading and looking up at a clock or wristwatch. In fact, I even tried looking at a clock at first but found I lost momentum in my reading so I immediately started to use the CD which made all the difference. I simply put on the appropriate timing track and concentrated on my reading while the voice on the CD counted down and let me know how much time was remaining. It was just like being in a live class (without the high cost usually accompanying live seminars) and nothing could have been easier! I highly recommend the Power Reading course book and CD!

Summary: Comprehension!
Review: Rick Ostrov's "Power Reading" is an excellent book. We use it in our homeschooling efforts. I'm working with my son (11) and daughter (9) using Rick's easy to follow, step-by-step method. My kids are reading more quickly, but more importantly, they are learning to better comprehend and retain information. And that's the ultimate point isn't it? Learning!

Summary: It actually works!
Review: Surprise! It actually works! The author has a very encouraging tone and with this book, you can advance at your own pace. Definately worth the money: but you must suspend all disbeliefand actually DO the exercises. I used to be the world's slowest reader: now I breeze through tech manuals and newspaper articles and before you know it, I have so much time to do other stuff.

Summary: Great book - buy the paperback
Review: The book is very beneficial, but I'll leave the comments to the other reviewer which helped me on the choice of this text.
My only big mistake was to buy the eBook edition: don't do it!
You don't save money, you cannot print excerpts to read when you don't have a PC, you can't use it on a PDA, you cannot have the PC read it aloud for you. I have to purchase the paper edition now or I'll go nuts.
But the content is great! Buy it

Summary: Waste of Money --- Look for Van Doren's Book
Review: The previous reviewers(Trent & Richard) express my sentiments exactly. This book is short on tricks or tips, but large on "filler" material (making the book longer than it should be).

I initally bought this bought two years ago from Amazon.com after reading the positive reviews. Boy was I let down! Reflecting on the book today, the only useful thing I remember is the tip on using a finger or pen as a guider.

Oh, and the other tip is to know what you're reading, and pace yourself accordingly -- i.e. the way you read a newspaper is different than how you may read Faulkner. Some things require that you skim over the title, first paragraph, and last paragraph (to save time); other reading material will go slower if you choose to breathe in each word and dissect the author's meaning.

Really, the best way to be a fast reader is just to read more. I also think that Van Doren's "How to Read a Book" might be more helpful for those wanting some real tips and hints on quick and comprehensive reading.

Overall, this book is meant to be checked out or skimmed over: buying this book at full price is a waste of money.

Summary: Unless you are in the 6th grade, save your money!
Review: This book is 95% filler, and 5% power reading content. Do you need advice on how to effectively scan newpapers, magazines and your email? Probably not. And you are probably not looking for advice on test taking and studying (considering that your are looking at a book that purports to build READING skills). Here is the 5% of the book that's "worthwhile." Read a wide variety of materials, and use a reading pointer (finger, pencil, whatever) to focus your attention, and most important, read often. The bottom line: only experience with words will improve your reading speed and comprehension. How does one get experience with words---by READING. There, I just saved you $15, and the heart ache of wasting your money. If you can find a used copy for $1-5s, then you won't be badly burned.

Summary: Excellent Book
Review: This book not only teaches you how to increase reading speed, it also teaches how to increase comprehension and absorb the most out of the materials. I used the techniques personally, it really worked. For example, by using the so called "regulator" technique, I effectively eliminated the bad habit of silently vocalizing word by word when I'm reading. This alone helped me double my reading speed. Also I benefit a lot from the "preview" and "review" techniques.
