Rating: Summary: Beautiful Book Review: There is really no substitute for the 20 volume OED, but this 2 volume Shorter OED, 5th edition is the next best thing. With approximately one-third of the entries of the 20 volume set for a fraction of the price, this dictionary is a practical alternative. There are several nice features, including a clear, accessible layout with an elegant use of bold, bullets, and shading to promote clarity and ease of reading. I very much enjoy this dictionary and highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: big, bulky, and a heck of a lot of words Review: This dictionary maybe the second best one there is, second to the real thing, the multi-volume OED. The only problem I have with these are that the books themselves - there being only two - they are so bulky and heavy that you can't easily handle them without laying the book flat on a table. The content is great and plentiful, but the physical reality of using such large, heavy books is something to consider.
Rating: Summary: this is a very good books Review: this is a very good books, worth to read, guaranteed
Rating: Summary: Excellent reference Review: This two-volume dictionary is a perfect choice for most people. Single volume dictionaries, such as the American Heritage and New Oxford American English, pale in comparison. There are no pictures and very few biographical entries. I find this a plus as it allows for more headwords. The layout is very clean and easy on the eyes. Judicious spacing makes the bold headwords easy to find. It should be noted that this edition replaces the fourth edition New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.
Rating: Summary: Big is not always better Review: You know somebody's in trouble when a dictionary published in 2002 and selling for over $100 does not give a definition for the word "download."
