Rating: Summary: It actually works! Review: I had a little trouble staying awake through the video because the dialogue is slow and repetitive, but I actually think that this process made me understand the principles better. You could get away with learning the signs from just the book, but I think the video forced me to see the bigger picture of the usefulness of signing, and the kids on the video were darn cute! I started showing signs to my daughter at 10 months, and sure enough, one month later, she was signing "eat," "more," and "all done." It is such a JOY to see her signing that she wants to eat!
Rating: Summary: great video Review: The video is the best part of this combo set, Garcia shows what he means and reinforces what he's saying throughout. at the end you're not only inspired, but also capable of starting right away.
Rating: Summary: A good idea, but an overpriced product Review: First, understand that I think the concept of teaching your baby to communicate through sign language is wonderful. I've started to sign with my 6 month old son, and I hope my actions pay off. But Garcia's kit, while helpful, is a lot of money for a skimpy product. The video has many scenes of children signing, which while cute and encouraging, is not that necessary. The advice is just as easily conveyed in prose, and the visual index, which shows you how to correctly form signs, is not that important as long as you're consistant with the signs that you teach your baby. I can't imagine why you would need to view it more than once. The book itself is surprisingly skimpy, and repeats the instructions in the video. It contains about 40 pages of text, and the remainder is sign diagrams. And I imagine you could reproduce your own reference chart, if you needed it.[Price] is a lot of money for many new families. If you get this as a gift, great. Otherwise, you might want to do what I did - check the video out from your local library, and purchase the book used.
Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: I just received the kit and I love it! I could hardly wait for my daughter (10 months) to get up from her nap and get started teaching her. This is a great resource for me, but I also got 4 books for my daughter to help reinforce the signs. Baby Signs for Mealtimes and My First Baby Signs by Linda Acredolo are the two that I prefer, but Baby's First Signs and More Baby's First Signs by Kim Votry are a nice addition as well. I truly recommend the Kit for parents who are want to communicate with their children. I just wish I had started teaching my daughter sooner (preferably around 6 months).
Rating: Summary: People tell me my son is a genius! Review: My son is now 19 months. We started using this program when he was about 8 months. He now makes more than 30 signs, and speaks more than 50 words. He's been able to communicate with us since he was about 10 months old. He learned eat, more and nurse first, then we started adding new signs when it seemed appropriate. Nurse seemed to be his favorite sign, and he often signed it to his great-grandmother, then would laugh! He was making jokes at about 14 months! The fold-out poster in this set is very helpful to have handy, both for your use and for caregivers to use when they're in your home. The video was fun to watch, and the signs are easy! Why alter the signs (as other baby sign books suggest) from ASL when maybe one day your child will want to communicate with an ASL speaking person? It's so fun to communicate with your child, and we've found it relieves a lot of frustration for your child when they can simply ask for what they want. I plan to use this with all of me children!
Rating: Summary: Great For Early Communication! Review: My husband, and I started doing this when are daughter was six months old- she is now 8 1/2 months (she made her first sign at 8 months) and is making the signs regularly. It's great! She can tells us when she's hungry, and when she wants milk. It's a wonderful way for us to communicate with her- and amazing to watch her learn and understand the signs. I highly recommend this product and I just bought it as a gift.
Rating: Summary: Loved Book -- Price too high though Review: This has been a great program for my son. All my children are late talkers and this has been a great tool of communication. It's been so great that all four of my children and my husband are doing sign language and we've taken it a step further to go behond what's in the book. Having tried other books, that didn't seem as thorough, it's worth getting if you have the resources, but it is a bit much to pay for just a book and video.
Rating: Summary: Love to Sign, but price tag not worth the material Review: While signing with your baby is an excellent tool and I highly recommend it and agree with all the principals introduced in this kit, the price tag is high for what you get. I found the "directions" overly simplistic and borderline insulting. I highly recommend all parents sign with their baby, but I feel you can get just as much from checking out an ASL book from the library... Be patient, be consistent, introduce three at first and then add when your child is ready for more. Start with the signs that make the most sense like "more" "milk" and "eat." The stand up "cheat sheet" is very nice. I think it would be easy to make your own from a good ASL book. If you need to be convinced that signing is worth your time, then maybe this kit is for you. But for those of us who are already sold on the idea, you may do better continuing on your own.
Rating: Summary: A cure to the not-so "terrific two's"? Review: This is truely a God send. I bought this kit when my son was only 8 months old. I really wanted to offset the "terrific two's" by being prepared this time around. Sure, this is not "the cure", but it sure does help when you think about all the avoided temper tantrums. He can comunicate many of his basic needs and wants. Something my other children never could have done. I recommend this kit to every parent because it has so much to offer. The book was an easy read and it is true ASL, which also serves as a good solid basis for a second language. The video tape is nice for the teenagers to watch and it was easy to understand how the signs were produced. Now, what I really like is the quick reference guide, just take it to daycare and wha-la, everyone is signing!
Rating: Summary: EXTRAORDINARY Review: This is the most incredible concept. I used this method with my 4th. baby at 11 mos. She was signing a new sign every day or two. Within a few months she was putting two signs together to make sentences. By 15 mos. old she was teaching her baby doll to sign. She started to speak at 17 mos. She is now 2-1/2 yrs. and her vocabulary is incredible and she continues to amaze us by her advanced communication abilities. I recommend this product to anyone who has a baby or is going to have a baby.
