Rating: Summary: The author's love for poetry, tires to inspire Review: ...is basically what the whole book is about.I didn't learn anything. I wasn't really interested in Wooldridge's personal anecdotes. Her strategies are New Agey. This book is for very beginning poets and tries to inspire.
Rating: Summary: Poemcrazy: The Best Book I've Ever Read! Review: A friend of mine picked up this book when we were in a book store, knowing that I had come to an almost sudden halt in my poetry writing for the past year or so after having been a poet for four or five years. I was pretty depressed about my writer's block, so I thought, "What the heck," and I bought the book. Not long into the book, which is magnificently written, I began to write again. I haven't stopped since, and my poetry has made massive improvement. The book helps to inspire and recreate that passion that writers can sometimes lose in the midst of the stresses of our days and our constant state of change and growth. --And best of all, it's fun, easy reading!
Rating: Summary: Dress Yourself With Rain Review: Easy and fun to read, not only for beginners. You'll read little short poems and thoughts in here that will make you think, and sometimes laugh, and will always inspire you to write. It has actually cheered me up in many ways, esp. unblock my writer's block when i have it. I sometimes just open to any page and there's the exact words, talking to only me. That's the sign of a great book. Here's another special thing about this book; it's not just for poets. I'm interested in screenplays and 'poemcrazy' has helped my writing's quality and quanity.
Rating: Summary: For would-be poets, fiction writers and novelists alike... Review: First let's begin with the cover; alone, it's worth the price of the book. Now the content... many people have bad memories of studying poetry in school, of having to memorize the work of poets they couldn't stand or couldn't relate to. Poemcrazy introduces the fun back into poetry, and its tone is friendly and appealing. Short, digestible chapters end with lessons. It's a wonderful book if you like narrative-type writing books or if you teach a poetry workshop. Or if you simply like great covers. Everyone can use a dose of poetry in their life. Here is dose number one, doled out in sweet, tasty spoonfuls.
Rating: Summary: Susan's "poemcrazy" will bring out the best in you! Review: I am an author,(IN THE COMPANY OF WOMEN and IDA'S RIDE).I was one of Susan's roomies at Santa Cruz, CA writer's conference. I figured, okay, I'll do my workshop and then I'll drop in on Susan's workshop and hassle her! I found myself hounding someone for a piece of paper and a pen while listening to Susan. Having missed most of the words she was tossing out into the audience, I managed to catch a few of her words, and wrote one of the best pieces I'd written in a long time! She is terrific and her book, poemcrazy, is filled with poignant happenings in her life. I love her work! You will love poemcrazy! as it allows you to let go and write something wonderful and fulfilling.
Rating: Summary: Helpful for non-poets and teachers too Review: I have been unsuccessfully trying to get students interested in poetry. I keep pointing out how interesting, how beautiful, etc. it is, with dead stares back at me...But I introduced Susan Wooldridge's word tickets as an exercise and the students loved it! So did I. I just listened to some songs and wrote tons of adjectives, nouns and a few verbs in MS Word using an address label format, then changed the fonts to be fun and different, printed them out and made copies, then cut up all of the individual words. I probably have 600 words times 3-4 copies. The students loved picking the words out of such a plentiful supply, and even the least interested ones got into the exercise. I love experiential exercises, and this one really works. My hope is that now when they look at poems again, they'll see them differently. At least after a few sessions maybe. If Susan Wooldridge is reading this, then I would like to say thank you with great feeling...learning to teach has been difficult and sometimes discouraging...with several great highs. This was definitely a peak. I'll close by saying that I'm looking at a word ticket now and it says "plum pebbles"...
Rating: Summary: Inspiration Review: I have had this book for years. It has helped me overcome writer's block, given exercises to jumpstart my writing, and new approaches to writing. The book is fun, like a poetry workshop in your own home. I recommend this book to new poets and beginning poets.
Rating: Summary: A creative poets dream. Review: I have to say her approach helped me take the stigma of stuffiness out of poetry. She helped open me up to writing more poetry with confidence. She takes you on a voyage through the other world of thought. Very healing.
Rating: Summary: An awesome book!!!!!!! Review: I was not a poet before I read this book and now I feel that I am. Poetry became painting with words for me after reading Poemcrazy. I feel as though someone inside has been released. If you want to start writing, get a copy of this book.
Rating: Summary: Reading this is like striking oil Review: I was one of five people who started a weekly writing group last year. At first we languished a bit, trying to find a way to get ourselves going. Then one week I brought in my little stash of word tickets I had made after reading Poemcrazy. It was as though a sudden rain had made the desert bloom. We have been pouring out poems and stories and vignettes at a rare clip ever since. One of the most important things about the techniques the author presents is that they force one away from contemplating one's own belly-button, so to speak, and bring one's attention to the limitless possibilities for poetry that spring forth when chance words and phrases put the imagination in overdrive. Too often writers of my generation think that poetry has to be about our deepest and most dramatic emotions, which often leads to some pretty deadly stuff being committed to paper. But when you pull out word tickets that say things like "fronds" and "slashed" and "cutting up the remnants," it's hard to be self-absorbed. In fact, it's hard to be anything but deeply original. Everyone I have introduced to the author's exercises and methods has fallen in love with them. Even my six-year-old nephew became enamored and proceeded to rename everything and everyone in his environment--a procedure that created some hilarious yet apposite new names. (I am now "Needs to sing," his sister is "Pistachio," his grandmother is "Finding secrets....") I adore this book.
