Review: I picked this up at my university bookstore. I was pretty impressed on how much emphasis was placed on every single breed. Not only does this book include dog breed origins, but also its energy level, exercise requirements, playfulness, affection level, friendliness, trainability, grooming requirements, and much more. I would easily pay close to $50 for such an informative book. This book was VERY affordable, especially for what it had to offer. This book helped me to select a breed that suits my lifestyle. I recommend this book especially to potential dog owners who would like to get a thorough description of various dog breeds.

Summary: The best dog book I've owned yet.
Review: I'm a thirteen -year old dog-crazy girl, so naturally I'd want a really good dog encyclopeia. Yeasterday I was at my local bookstore when I came upon this book. I was up half the night reading it because it was so good. Every AKC breed is mentioned, and the information is thorough. Each breed had two full-color pictures, and well as an illistrated picutre done in pencile, describing the standard. The breeds are divided into the seven groups, and that can be a good thing. I can't get enough of this book.

Review: If you are a dog person this is the book for you. It includes all of the important major and minor details and my favorite part is that it tells you the diseases and warnings for each breed. Thanks for making this book Barron. Your the best!!!

Summary: Worth it for the pictures!
Review: In addition to this being a wonderful tome for the coffee table with its numerous color photographs, Baron's Encyclopedia is filled with useful information for the prospective owner trying to decide on a breed. There are paragraphs on temperament and health concerns (excluding cancer), but the most immediately useful feature is the five-point rating of characteristics such as trainability, affection, watchdog ability, grooming issues, etc. Dog lovers will want to own this book.

Summary: One of the best out there
Review: It took $50 worth of purchase of other dog encyclopedias for me to appreciate this concise, well-written, humorous, and very informative book. It outlines the history of the breed in question, the temperament (in several paragraphs, NOT with little obscure and ambiguous icons), and there is an overall rating area that succinctly profiles the breed's exercise needs, energy level, affection level for other pets and dogs and strangers, and grooming needs. If one is trying to decide between two breeds, the ratings make it very convenient to compare and contrast. It also provides the AKC rank for each breed, which gives one an idea of the popularity (and perhaps the availability) of the particular breed in the US. This book does not list very obscure European breeds, however. For those of you who are "just looking for a nice dog", I do highly recommend this book.

Summary: Good book - well written & good layout
Review: Just like the last 2 reviewers ... I have only one little issue with this book ... some breeds are missing.But otherwise the book is fabulous ... lots of pictures and generally good ones too ... and more important, it provides reasonably substantial information about the breeds that do appear in the book ... from a brief breed history, breed temperament to expected life span ... from grooming needs to general health care ... Particularly like how information is presented in a clear organised manner. Carries more useful information other similar type books. A very good book for people looking for their 1st dog or anyone interested in learning more about the different breeds.

Summary: THIS is the Ultimate Dog Book
Review: Other books may call themselves The Ultimate Dog Encyclopedia, or whatever, but they are not. This one is! The descriptions of the breeds and their origens make for endless hours of absorbing reading. The large, vivid photographs seem to capture the spirit of each breed and aptly illustrate the points made in the text. If you are trying to decide on what breed to buy (which I am), the charts make comparison of the characteristics of different breeds (including everything from weight to playfullness) a very pleasant chore. My only complaint, and it is a very small one, is that the charts do not always fully agree with the text. In those cases, I take the verbal descriptions in the text as the ultimate authority. All in all, this is a book which no dog lover, or for that matter, no animal lover in general, should be without.

Summary: Excellent review of all breeds in an easy format .
Review: This book as with all her others reach out to the novice. It makes the novice knowledgeable in making choices as to what breed they may like. It is well done yet not so technical that it is over your head. Felt pictures were the weakest point although the reproduction was very good. Some of the pictures were not of the best examples of their breed. I have found the book to be very useful in gathering information about different breeds, and what to expect from them. As a member of several Kennel Clubs, this book has been a big hit at meetings for the old timers as well as the new members. I highly recommend it for all.
