Rating: Summary: A coffee table book? Review: It's an impressive book to look at and hold ... quality paper and the photographs are very well done ... lovely printing and colour seperation ... But for a book this size, price and with the title "Encyclopedia" ... I was hoping to find more information about the dogs themselves. Most descriptions are brief. Perhaps too much space has been taken up by those wonderful photographs. So, unless the reader is into collecting pictures of dogs, the books offers little that an average/reasonable dog owner does not already know, or cannot easily find out with a quick search on the Internet for the price of a phone call.More of a coffee table book perhaps?
Rating: Summary: One of the best.... Review: Most useful and offers the novice about the more important aspects of every breed. This is the revised edition that includes more breeds than any other book I've seen and read--from Afghans to Zwergpinschers. It is also updated to provide the latest information in dog care. Each breed is discussed, from its character to its more ideal home environment. And as one would expect from Dorling-Kindersley (the publishing house), it has more than six hundred photos. A must for the dog lover.
Rating: Summary: Essential for every dog owner Review: My mother and I love dogs and are able to identify most breeds by sight. Naturally, we loved this book. Not only does it provide information on many, many breeds, but it has at least two pictures of every kind of dog. From the popular Golden Retriever and Poodle to the extremely rare Chinook and Danish Chicken Dog, this book has a lot of information. I especially liked that it gave favorable descriptions of the Newfoundland and St. Bernard. I own one of each.
Rating: Summary: The New Encyclopedia of the Dog Review: New edition of an illustrated resource that presents detailed descriptions of about 420 breeds and varieties of dogs from around the world. Fogle (veterinarian, lecturer and author) illuminates why dogs have achieved a place of honor in the human community, traces the special position of canines in human history, and presents practical information on choosing and caring for a dog. He also discusses canine anatomy, behavior, and psychology, thus offering insights into the way dogs learn and how they see the world around them. Contains 600-plus color photographs.
Rating: Summary: Good in Dog Care, Poor in Dog Breeds Review: No doubt, Dr Bruce Fogle may be a good vet - BUT is he an experienced/proffesional dog trainer or behaviourist? NO! Simple theory. He features many rare breeds, and wrote profiles about them in this book. BUT ask yourself, do you think he had the chance to interact with these breeds in sufficient numbers to make judgements about them? I guess he is just took all this info (about the breeds) from some downright stupid book/website. Just read Paws to Consider written by America's Top Dog Trainers. They mentioned that Corgis were very smart and very trainable. Raising Rover written by a dog trainer/behaviourist mentioned that Corgis wanted to please and learn, and were good with kids too. PS: EVERYONE OUT THERE REMEMBER - HE'S A VET - NOT A DOG TRAINER OR BEHAVIOURIST WANNA BOOK ON DOG CARE AND HEALTH - GET HIS BOOK WANNA BOOK ON BREEDS - GET PAWS TO CONSIDER AND RAISING ROVER
Rating: Summary: The best dog encyclopedia Review: The new encyclopedia of the dog is a revised edition that is guaranteed to have some of the rarest breeds. I looked for a book about the Kooiker dog, a very rare breed and found it in the new encyclopedia of the dog. Anyone who likes dogs will enjoy looking through the full colour pictures of all the different breeds.
Rating: Summary: Nice pictures offset by many innacuracies:too broad a brush. Review: The strength, such as it is, of this book is that it at least gives multiple pictures of each breed and samples of coat colors. This does give one a fairly good impression of what the breed in toto looks like which is good for the rarer breeds, about which it does at least include some information. However especially with the rarer breeds the behavior is, or should be, of greater concern and this book is quite deficient in this area and it gives many false impressions. One of the other reviewers mentioned the Dogo as an example. I have a acquiantance with one who agrees with that reviewer. In my case I've had a Central Asian Ovcharka for over two years now and find this book's summary of them flawed. It is not a dog for everyone but this books just plainly states they are unsuitable especialy with children. Of all the livestock guardian breeds this one has been (some might say ruthlessly) bred for kindness towards children. Anyone with any experience with them would be surprised to know that they are not good with kids. We've invested quite a lot of time in learning about the breed, in which effort this book was not helpful, and socializing her. Our seven year old and thirteen year old are quite surprised to learn that this is not a good fmaily dog. I also found that the life expectancies listed for the larger breeds to be remarkably consistent in the book and quite inconsistent with real world situations. I've had Bullmastiffs and they don't live as long as this book claims and I know he overstates the life expectancies of Irish Wolfhounds. The rarer (non-AKC type) larger breeds also live longer than this book states. There are enough fourteen year old Caucasians, Kangal Dogs, Central Asians and Anatolians (only recently have they closed the stud book) for this not to be a remarkable age. If one does not stop with or trust everything in this book it is an okay-to-good addition to one's library.

It has beautiful pics of all kinds of dogs and tells many things about each specific breed, like weight, height, looks, grooming needs, good in cold hot or both, good with kids, ect. Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: This book is excellent. You will not regret your purchase. I read this book everynight. If your interested in buying a dog and want to choose a breed, this book is perfect. Each dog has its own description and history by the author. There are also icons which represent aspects of each dog: A pitbull might have a child icon crossed out, meaning: "not suitable for children". Therefore, a husky might have a snowflake, building crossed out and a brush icon meaning: "good in the snow, not suitable for urban environment and requires much grooming". This book is exremely helpful, educational and entertaining. The pictures are amazingly vivid. The book layout, order and organization is excellent. Again, if you are interested in purchasing a dog, this book is PERFECT!! If you are interested in dog breeds, this book is PERFECT!! If you love good photography and tons of reading time, this book is PERFECT!! You wont regret buying this book..
Rating: Summary: Most complete book of breeds. Review: This book is the first source that I recommend for anyone looking for a dog that doesn't know what breed they would like. It has very comprehensive descriptions on both carachter and looks, not to mention beautiful pictures. I am a dog trainer, and vet tech. This book is also the only one I have found that includes many rather unknown breeds.
