Rating: Summary: This is "the" finishing book Review: It's hard to imagine a better book for anyone from newbies to experts on the topic of wood finishing. The author does a terrific job of demystifying the topic, and he even goes out of his way to directly debunk some of the old wives tales that are still floating around in this area.Even more impressive is that the author is not a zealot about techniques and materials. He combines and almost conspicuous pragmatism with a very deep knowledge of finishing. I can't recommend this one highly enough.
Rating: Summary: What they say is true! This really is a great book! Review: Lets face it, no one wants to mess up a great assembly with lousy finishing. While making sawdust is fun, finishing is just plain intimidating to novice woodworkers. This book makes it much less so. Manufacturers of finishes don't really tell you what's in the product and so its really hard to tell what kind of result you will get without a lot of painful experimentation. The explanations and details in this book make the whole subject much less mysterious and provide info I've not been able to find elsewhere. Based on the reviews I read on Amazon, I put this on my Xmas wish list and I am really glad my wife got it for me.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, Clear and Informative Review: Probably the most informative book I have read. The Author explains the basics in plain terms with clear detail on each type of finish, methods of application and appropriate thinners.
Rating: Summary: Understanding Wood Finishing Review: Quality wood finishing is my strength more than woodworking itself. I have several good books on the subject and wanted an up to date book that includes the newer finishes. Also, I needed something that was practical and would demystify so many of the choices. This book explains the basics of many finishes and gives good reasons why some are better than others for particular situations. I am actually buying several additional copies for friends who share my interest in good finishing.
Rating: Summary: A beacon of light in the finality of finishing Review: Really now, there's tons of books on wood finishing--who needs another one? Simple. Few previous writers have bothered to do the requisite research. Of all the hundreds of dollars I've spent on woodworking books, this is the first one that was worth more than I payed for it. Mr. Flexner's book has re-ordered my thinking about wood finishing beginning with sand paper. I now have a clear idea of what I'm doing and why. I'll never be fooled again by the ediots at the paint store! Thanks Bob, it's apparent that writing this book took lots of time and work--great job.

Rating: Summary: Full marks Review: Ten out of ten for this book - nothing else needs to be sai
Rating: Summary: Wood finishing fact, not folklore Review: The author does not rely upon folklore or tradition in recommending finishes. He researched the chemistry behind the products and spells out the strengths and weakness for each type. Great information on preparing the surface, stains vs dyes, bleaching, repairing and much more. This book takes the mystery out of finishing wood.
