Summary: provides a good overview
Review: Viault's book (currently sitting on the shelf just above my head) is good for quick overviews of major topics in European history. This book isn't meant to be used by itself; it's more like a reference text than anything else. Occassionaly, Viault neglects certain topics, and some are given more coverage than appropriate for a small text while others don't get enough. All in all, though, this is a handy book to have around.
