Summary: Buy a real dictionary
Review: I bought this dictionary for my son at the beginning of the school year at a book fair. The cover caught my eye. Then I began to look through the book, as I am very discriminating, especially with a dictionary. It has diagrams to assist understanding that are labeled. An example is caterpillar and it shows how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly.Building, it shows all the stages of building a house and labels everything on the house. The beginning of the book explains initials. acronyms, and abbreviations and explains what they are and each new letter is shown by the upper and lower case. It explains the history of certain words, what a suffix is and a prefix are and all of the oddities of the English language. It also includes American Braille and sign language as well as flags of the independent countries of the world. The illustrations of the book are remarkable. I have never seen a dictionary for children that was so remarkable and worth whatever it was I paid for it. My son is always asking me questions beyond what a book says and I do not always know the answers. This book appears to go the limit of what he would ask and I could go to another section to get the answer if it was not on the page when he asks.It is truly a remarkable dictionary. Mrs Symmington

Summary: An excellent beginning dictionary
Review: I consider dictionaries and knowledge of how to properly use a dictionary, to be absolutely vital in anybody's education.

This is a very good choice for a child, or even for adults who are not accustomed to using dictionaries a lot. I like this one, because, unlike most children's dictionaries, most words a child will need to look up will be in there, and because most of the definitions are adequate. (Children's dictionaries are usually notoriously incomplete!)

My kids have a couple of dictionaries available when they study - if the word they need to get defined is not in this one (or if the needed definition is not included), they'll look it up in a high school or college dictionary. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often!

I do recommend that every child have a copy of THIS particular dictionary, as it's the best one I've come across for younger kids. Also, I recommend Hubbard's "How to Use a Dictionary" book/course, so every student can really use dictionaries with success.

Happy studying!

Summary: Not A 'Complete' Dictionary
Review: I purchased this Dictionary for my daughters thinking it was a thorough complete dictionary that would meet all of their needs when searching for a word. I have recently come to learn that this book definetly falls short of a complete dictionary,..as it simply does not contain many words you would find in any other complete dictionary. Several times my children were searching for a word and gave up not being able to find it in the book, so I had to get MY dictionary so they could find the definition! Very disappointing!

Summary: Easy to use. Perfect for grade school children.
Review: I'm a second grade teacher. My students sometimes rather read this dictionary than the other books that I have in my classroom library. It's very colorful and simple to use. A must have for any classroom and/or grade school student.

Summary: Buy a real dictionary
Review: If your child is old enough to use this dictionary, then buy him or her a real (non-children's) dictionary. I just bought this for my 7 year old and was horrified when I looked at all of the incorrect pronunciation guides. I don't mind the non-standard approach to pronunciation, but I do mind that many of them are wrong. Even simple words like "into" (in-too or in-tuh) are wrong. I don't want my son telling me that the dictionary says it is OK to say "in-tuh" instead of in-too. Many of the pronunciations are wrong or will be pronounced incorrectly by your child unless you have them study the Pronunciation Guide in the beginning of the book. "Marriage" has (ma-rij). Most kids would look at that and pronounce it wrong, but you have to see in the book's pronunciation guide that the 'a' is like the 'a' in "mad". However, in my Standard College Dictionary, the pronunciation is (mar' ij) with an 'r' in the first syllable! "Distant" is given as(diss-tuhnt) in the book with the "uh" pronounced like the 'u' in "bun"! I will now go and buy my son a real dictionary and introduce him to a proper phonetic alphebet that is correct and accurate and can be used for the rest of his life.

Summary: Scholastic Children's Dictionary
Review: My son seems to be able to use it by himself very easily at home (2nd grade). I personally think it is a great tool, well layed out and easy to use. The school also highly recommends to all parents that they have a copy at home.

Summary: The only children's dictionary using phonetic pronunciations
Review: Thank you for the opportunity to point out one of the unique features of this dictionary. It is the only dictionary for children that uses phonetic pronunciation guides instead of the more difficult diacritical symbols that children cannot easily understand.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great for kids
Review: this book is very easy for my child to use. She loves the illistrations and makes learning fun
