Rating: Summary: NOTHING BEATS THE VALUE Review: I just purchased Oxford's atlas and I'm amazed. It's half the price of comparable atlases and delivers everything my family needs. Clear, easy-to-read, and attractive. The city and satellite maps are also spectacular. Street names, major points of interest, train and subway stations, hospitals and police stations, you name it. I photocopied San Francisco for an upcoming trip. The reviewer who doesn't like the atlas is right--the colors are wonderful. But he's wrong about why they are there. It's not just eye candy. They allow for instant recognition of geographic features and altitude. I highly recommend buying this atlas. For the price there's nothing better.
Rating: Summary: (Oxford) Atlas of the World Review: In choosing a world atlas for my family, I looked at all that were available: from Oxford, National Geographic, Rand McNally, Hammond, DK, and other publishers. This new edition of the Oxford Atlas of the World is clearly the gold standard. Just published, it is of course the most up-to-date atlas available. More importantly, it is accurate and detailed, exquisitely produced (a joy to look at) and very readable. Unlike other atlases, for example, the maps do not run into the gutters. The introductory section containing informational maps and data (country population, income, products, languages, etc.) and stunning satellite photos is virtually a book in itself and worth the price of admission. And for all that one gets, the price is more than reasonable. This is more than a reference book--it's a good read. I highly recommend it.

Rating: Summary: Don't buy in to the hpye Review: of the National Geographic Atlas. I teach geography and I use the Oxford Atlas. Unlike what another reviewer said, it's much more than pretty colors. Oxford's atlas is the most accurate and offers an unbiased viewpoint--not an Amerocentric one. It's also the easiest to read. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: The last good atlas I bought was a Readers Digest atlas in 1963. I loved it! The maps were excellent and the index was good. I've looked for newer atlases since then, but never found any I like. I prefer basic atlases with good maps! The Oxford Atlas of the World is just as good as my old favorite one. The maps are supurb and it has an extensive index. That's all I ask for in an atlas, but it also has other features. It doesn't have extensive US maps but I didn't need that as I have a very good road atlas of US. If you just want to look up places this one is excellent.
Rating: Summary: Superb atlas and superb value Review: This atlas is even better than I had anticipated based on its reviews. The book, quite a large tome, is a beautiful and comprehensive cartographic overview of the world. The atlas's weakest area might be considered to be its US map section, as those maps are presented by specific regions and not by individual states. However, the latter is nit-picking since this is indeed a "world atlas" and not intended to be a road map of the USA. (Nevertheless, my 22-year-old Hammond Medallion atlas features detailed maps of individual US states (showing each county, major roads, etc) as well as the individual provinces of Canada, and a quite comprehensive world map section. Those big old Hammond atlases were better than their modern counterparts, but I digress...) I also own the latest edition of the National Geographic atlas and the 2000 edition of the largest Hammond World Atlas. While the latter have their strong points, I'd rate the 11th edition Oxford as the best general-purpose world atlas, and the Amazon price is certainly right. I ordered mine "next day air" to minimize shipping damage but its good packing would probably have kept it safe even via UPS ground. However, I still recommend 1 or 2-day shipping for buyers particular about book condition--- this is a very large, heavy book! Besides the excellent main map section, the Oxford has an extensive introductory section with all types of specialized maps and related data. Furthermore, the atlas's index is well-organized and extensive. The maps themselves are unusually legible and don't require squinting to find towns, rivers, etc. The book is an invaluable reference and also a work of art. A "must buy" as far as I'm concerned!
Rating: Summary: Best General Atlas Available Review: This atlas provides both physical and political maps, unlike many atlases, which provide only one or the other. Its presentation of facts about the world in chart form in addition to the maps is very readable. It covers so much in such a good way visually that I was up reviewing it all night the day it arrived.
Rating: Summary: Very good, but be careful with the spine! Review: This Atlas was hands down the best I have owned. The geographic statistics about income, population, life expectancy etc. are very informative and helpful. Measurements mainly given in Metric, very helpful for us Canadians =). Be really careful about abusing the atlas though, the spine is fairly flimsy and will break if you drop it.
Rating: Summary: One of the best atlases Review: This is one of the best atlases - and a newly added country profiles section and foreign goegraphical terms glossary make this book even more useful. The atlas is well designed and beautiful. However, I recommend this atlas be bought together with the Hammond World Atlas, another excellent atlas, because of different place names, thematic information, statistical data, etc.
Rating: Summary: Most atlas for your money! Review: This is the atlas you need to buy. The best - English language - atlas I ever came across. (The best ever, being Cartographia's "Világatlasz", in Hungarian. ;)
