Rating: Summary: Best prep book for the SAT verbal part I've ever seen! Review: "500 SAT words and how to remember them forever" is probably a guarantee to score well on the SAT (verbal part). I've never seen a book which teaches you words in such a funny way. It's fun to learn the 500 words, and it doesn't take a lot of time! And you won't forget those words! I'm from Germany and English isn't my first language, and even I am able to learn those 500 words, and that's saying something!! If you want to build a strong vocabulary or improve your grades or prepare for the SAT, this book should be your 1st choice!
Rating: Summary: Good, but bad Review: A good selection of words and decent devices to make them slightly easier to remember, but few serious faults. Most of the visiual images are for relatively familiar words, defeating the purpose. And even worse, much of the writing is politically incorrect or even offensive. One word's image is an "indian chief," to name one example. Overall, a good list of words, but not necessarily good content.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: Absolutely amazing how this thing works! I wasn't sure it would work for me when I ordered it, I've had some trouble in my vocabulary expansion. But after I took a look at it and a few of the words I was amazed how easy it was to remember! It's sure helping me, -definitely look into it.
Rating: Summary: Fairly useful study tool for the vocabulary of the SATs Review: Although there are many descriptive pictures and definitions to help you to remember the words, only a few of them truly stuck in my memory. Instead of using this book to help remember words, I used it more as a list of commonly used SAT words. That's what really helped me the most. I was able to simply search through the book for words I didn't know and find the definitions. Even though I'm a very visual person, the pictures didn't really help me that much. I still suggest purchasing this book, however, and using it as I said earlier, as a list of commonly used SAT words.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a successful way to LEARN vocabulary long-term! Review: As a teacher I am always looking for books that will help my students actually remember words not just learn them for the test. I heard about this book at the National Middle School Association conference this year and tried it with my students. To my surprise, my students REMEMBERED the words thanks to the stories provided by this book. You see, this book takes all the work out of teaching students words. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their vocabulary and keep these words in their long-term memory. My students will attest to this success.
Rating: Summary: I've recomended this book to anyone who is taking the SAT. Review: Both the 500 SAT Words and How To Remember Them Forever! and 100 SAT Math Tips and How To Master Them Now! books are must buys for anyone who is taking the SAT. I myself and friends of mine who were preparing saw a big improvement in our scores after studying these books for a month. GET THEM!!
Rating: Summary: Lacks a Body Review: Hilarious, enjoyable introduction; really got me hyped up to learn the words that were to follow. Okay, so when I hit the words my mind goes blank. Why? I see, well, common words, heck, EASY words. Words you're already supposed to know. I flip through the book hoping it would advance, but no, it was consistant, simple words. Words like "mundane" and "supplement". Uh huh. Sure, I didn't know what "avarice" was (used as an example in the excellent introduction), but, hey, the 500 words in this book are a joke! This isn't the most challenging book out there. Printed on great paper though!
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Study Tool! Review: I am an educator of 26 years. This book is a great resource for me as I teach my students higher level words that they need to know FOREVER!!! My students learn the word definitions for the test, but the pictures and stories help them learn them for life. As my students become proficient at relating the words with the stories and pictures, they begin to do the same thing for themselves when they come across words that are not included in this book. Every year I offer the opportunity for the students to order 500 SAT Words, and parents will not only order them for their students in my class, but also order copies for their college bound students as well. As a teacher, I have found this book to be a great resource. My entire campus uses this book as a "school-wide" vocabulary program. By the time our kids leave our campus, they KNOW these words and have a new tool for learning additional words. I can't say enough about how much this book has added to our campus program and to my classes.

Rating: Summary: It works for kids Review: I bought this book for my 12 year old daughter. The cues and images that the author uses to help remember words are very effective for my daughter. I know because I have tried it both ways -- with straight word study, and with this book. When going over word lists and definitions, my daughter would always forget words, and I would have to let her look at a word and its definition again. With this book, however, I have never had to repeat. When she is stumped, she recalls the word cues or images and -- bingo. I try to reinforce the word definition with real-world sentences. I believe that the author could improve the book by adding a few sentences illustrating word usage. Overall, I think this is a much more fun and therefore effective method for teaching kids my daughter's age.
