Rating: Summary: The Baseball Encyclopedia Review: I have used this tome as my bible for years. I have run into former baseball players who swear they were players for a major league team but are not listed. I still have not figured out how often it is revised.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book and CD Review: I really like the Macmillan Encyclopedia and prefer it to the much-ballyhooed TOTAL BASEBALL. I was surprised to learn of the problems with the CD-ROM. It works fine on both my computers (one runs Windows 95 and the other runs Windows 98).
Rating: Summary: Best Reference EVER! Review: I'm awaiting the next edition. I believe (hope) they're waiting for the last Century to "offically" end (Rumor) before the next edition. FYI: the first day of the 21st Century is 1/1/2001.
Rating: Summary: Definitive and well-worth the price Review: If you have any interest in baseball stats, you MUST get this book. I have never seen anything so thorough, so complete, and so well-put together. Any baseball fan who does not have this book needs to beg, borrow, or steal a copy. Well, buying one is probably not a bad idea, either.
Rating: Summary: Time for a new edition! Review: It's very informative and useful, as always. BUT, it's too old. 1998 was a great and classic season and it's time for an update. And if someone buys the hardcover, the yearly update editions should be included free. (It doesn't have 1997 nor, I believe, 1996, either).
Rating: Summary: GREAT BASEBALL REFERENCE Review: Often used to settle baseball trivia bets. But watch it! An index this vast is sure to contain errors and typos. There are those who comb endlessly in search of such lagniappes. Wouldn't it be nice if the MLB Encyclopedia contained a brief narrative of each person: habits, strange mannerisms, cause of death,...? Thumbnail photos and sketches would further help to humanize this acreage of numbers. Never-the-less, an indispensable fountain of information about America's national sport.
Rating: Summary: Great reference Review: The book has every little fact about baseball that you could possibly imagine. It is the complete source for baseball information. The only drawback is that it is hard to pinpoint exact information, because the book has no index.
Rating: Summary: Book - great; CD is rotten. Review: The book is great for baseball statistical fanatics, but the CD would not work on my machine. I made numerous calls to Macdigital with no response. So I recommend the book but not with the CD.
Rating: Summary: CD Anyone? Review: The definitive baseball book. Equally satisfying during the summer or hot stove season. An idea for the next edition - provide an interactive CD rom version of the encyclopedia. Updates will be easier, and you can charge a lot more money.
