Summary: Survival from those who know best
Review: An exact reprint (so it says) of what the US Army supplies to its soldiers. Includes detailed descriptions of topics including water procurement, makeshift weapons, knots, identifying and hunting wildlife, and the "universal plant-edibility test." I especially enjoyed the Will to Survive section. Kind of like a grown-up, expanded Boy Scouts manual. Filled with diagrams and color photographs. Written in wonderfully simple language. Excellent if your activities require this book's information, but also a fascinating read for the "armchair adventurer." Expects some degree of prior knowledge, though, because it is written for soldiers.

Summary: The Best Book on Survival
Review: As a Special Forces soldier, I read just about every book there is on survival. Most are hardly worth the paper they are printed on, and that especially includes the popular "survival" books which tend to contain potentially deadly errors and omissions. The main problem with these "worst case" books and others is that most readers, unfortunately, have no way of knowing what is accurate and what is fantasy. For readers who wish to stick to nonfiction, this book is your best choice.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: Having recently broken down just near Dagenham, I don't know what I would have done without this superb guide to practical survival. For a full two hours, as I waited for the RAC man to come, I was hiding in my lion-proof shelter while stalking the A406(S) for meercats to cosh and stew along with the edible grasses I had fried in improvised oil (let's not go there). All in all, an excellent book.

Summary: Things every man needs to know!
Review: I am in the JROTC Marine corps. and i own this book. This book is terrific on explaining things to the simple person, and it gives you the nowledge of what you need to know in certain situations. It is a very good book and i would recommend it to anyone that was serious in going into the Armed Forces, or just the average 'camper'.

Summary: The Survival Book For Everyone
Review: I have now read this book, after taking the advice of the October 1, 2001 reviewer whose son is a military doctor (see, The First How-To Book Everyone Should Consider), and find it to be everything I expected, and more. It's a book EVERYONE should have, even if you're a couch-potato, not an outdoors person.

Summary: Rambo's guide to make it in the woods
Review: I just got this book as a gift, and I am ready to hit the woods. It is amazing that people have spent the time to analyze the scenarioes and presented options of survival. WOW. Good pick!

Summary: Ok, But...
Review: I like this book and enjoyed reading it. However, I agree with a previous reviewer who recommended Greg Davenport's books (Wilderness Living and Wilderness Survival) in addition to or instead of the US Army Survival Manual. Davenport covers the same material but avoids all the military issues found in this manual.

Summary: The newest revision of this field manual is suspect at best.
Review: I liked this FM (field manual) much, much better back in the old days when it was issued as "Survival, Evasion, and Escape." Call me a traditionalist, but only a book which tells you not to hit on the natives' wives because you need to respect their property rights prepares you for survival outside the ambit of the ACLU.

I'm not really kidding. It's only a weakness of our understanding of the world outside our national borders that makes us laugh at the wording of the old Survival, Evasion and Escape FM. There are huge parts of this planet exist where women are still regarded as property. Laughing at this attitude or calling it "politically incorrect" did not protect us from that wretched day of September 11th, 2001 when people from places like that decided to enforce their world views on us.

If we ARE to survive on a world where those people have the power to destroy the Pentagon and huge sections of New York with box cutters, airplane tickets, and selected fanatics with minimal-to-moderate mission preparation, we need military technical references that address the world as it is, not as we must pretend it is in order not to offend the political correctness industry.

What's my point? Apart from a very few changes of debatable value and/or accuracy in the physical and medical theory of survival tactics, the new version of this field manual may be no improvement at all. In fact, this edition of the manual should be thoroughly and critically examined to assure that the changes made from the previous "Survival, Evasion, and Escape" release were not made purely from domestic political considerations. Otherwise this book could actually get people killed for relying on it.

Summary: A must-have book
Review: I'm a lonely hiker/climber, as I go outdoor for training and to shoot photos, and if I can suggest the ONE book you'll allow to add some weight to your backpack when you're out there for some days, alone, you've found it! Lots of infos, clearly explained, nothing left to the imagination, but effective and SAFE hints on how to get off troubles, if any. It's a good book both for unexperienced and serious hikers. I serviced in the army as an officer, and believe me, these things really work out there! Excellent!
