Rating: Summary: Excellent companion to the series Review: I especially enjoyed Gabaldon's descriptions of the art of writing. She reminds us that what looks effortless on the page is actually hard work. This companion also has teasers for the next two books, character descriptions, even a glossary. It is packed with so much information that I don't think a fan of the series should be without it.
Rating: Summary: I'd read the phone book, if Ms. Gabaldon wrote it Review: This is a great companion to the OUTLANDER novels. Besides giving us a look at all the fascinating background of the novels, the hilarious trivia and footnotes, and the education of the glossaries and extensive bibliography--the book is just plain fun to read! I'm not a writer and don't aspire to be, but I found Ms. Gabaldon's explanations and illustrations of the writing process as absorbing to read as the stories themselves. The lady has style!
Rating: Summary: A must have! Review: All Outlander fans must have this book
Rating: Summary: Gotta have it Review: I wasn't going to buy this book, because it isn't a novel, and that's what I mostly like to read. I love all the OUTLANDER novels, and can't wait for the next one! One of my male co-workers bought this book, though, and brought it to work to read on his lunch-hour because he couldn't stop reading it. I thought that was a good recommendation, so I borrowed the book while he was working and browsed through it. Wow! I couldn't believe how the whole OUTLANDER world just reached out of the pages and grabbed me again, just from the synopses and characters. I went home and put the COMPANION on my Christmas list!
Rating: Summary: Tremendously entertaining! Review: I am amazed at some of the comments and can only think that the people who didn't like this book can't possibly have read it. NO, all the material in the book isn't on the DG Website! (great as the site is) I'm a huge fan of the site and have read everything on it. Twice. Ms. Gabaldon very generously posted small _bits_ of the COMPANION on her website, just as she posts excerpts of the novels, to let people have a taste of what's coming. If you LOOK, people, you can see that only a small part of things like the Methadone List or the Family Trees are posted online--the Whole Thing (and a ton of other cool stuff) are in Da Book. It would be a shame for anyone to miss out because they had been misled.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly Enjoyed It! Review: Can't imagine why I'm seeing reviews w/ one star! I do have one question for Ms. Gabaldon: If you're NOT Claire (as you mention in the the Companion), why is it that the book sounds so much like her? Did she shove you out of the way again! Thanks so much for the fix (not to downplay your efforts at all!) between Drums of Autumn and Fiery Cross. By the way, it's (technically) late 1999 ... any chance my husband will be able to purchase Fiery Cross for me as a Christmas gift?
Rating: Summary: Inspiring! Review: This book is a wonderful companion to the greatest series I have ever read. Diana Gabaldon explained what went into writing a historical fiction / romance / fantasy. This book has inspired me to write.
Rating: Summary: What a terrific book! Review: I really wasn't sure what to expect from this book--I think I was hoping just to wallow a little more deeply in the world of Jamie and Claire! I found so much more, though, amazing insights into the characters and their world, dozens of little details and plot connections that I'd missed--and best of all, a true feeling of "knowing" the author of these wonderful stories!
Rating: Summary: reluctant to put it down Review: I first started reading the book in 1997. There were only 2 series available in Indonesia, the Voyager and Drums of Autumn. I had to wait another 2 years before I could acquire the other sequels, and only could purchase them in Singapore (September 1999). I asked a friend who went to the US in June 1999 to look for them but was told (in 5 bookstores) that it was out of stock. I hated having to read the first and last parts only, not knowing about the middle parts. Anyway, I have them all, and I am reading it for the second time as the information is so vast you keep forgetting the parts in the book. Looking forward to the next book. Make it quick!
Rating: Summary: HAVEN'T READ IT YET BUT CAN'T WAIT TO Review: I'VE READ ALL GABALDON'S BOOKS AND HAVEN'T BEEN DISAPPOINTED YET. IT'S GREAT TO FIND AN AUTHOR WHO CAN WRITE ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE AND COMBINE THE TWO SO WELL. I'M SICK OF THOSE TRASHY BODICE RIPPERS THAT CONSTANTLY FILL THE WOMEN'S SECTION OF THE BOOKSTORES.
