Rating: Summary: ATTENTION ALL CLERGY. . . Review: Buy this book, if for no other reason than for the wonderful sermon illustrations it provides! An uplifting and inspiring read. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Decidedly Dull Review: How many of you found sermons vastly entertaining as children? Do you think they'd be more entertaining if in the confines of a book? Victorianate horror(such as the previously mentioned ill fated door slammer poem), prattling on about the often obscure, abstracted moral of the story, do not an interesting book make. Often, the book makes a joke of itself, droning on about *serious* morals drawn from *silly* stories. I gave this book two stars because Bennette obviously put some amount of effort into this book, and I believe that deserves some merrit, sadly, there is not much else in this book that I can congradulate him on.
Rating: Summary: A Counter to some of the Negative Reviews Review: I don't know why liberals have such a deep, intense hatred for morals, but that is no excuse to say this book harms people. This book is good for people. It is filled with lovely, interesting stories about being good to ourselves and others. I have owned this book for a while and it is one of my favorites. Unless you hate moral stories, you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: A good resource for teachers Review: ... I find the book a good resource for classroom discussion starters and quick "read aloud" selections. Some selections in the anthology are worthless, but I know of no other book that draws together such a wide selection of Western moral classics, told for the most part in modern language.
Rating: Summary: Childish liberal sabotage of a worthwhile book Review: I bought this book for a friend's child, read through it and then bought myself a copy. It is a great book to be read aloud to children or enjoyed by adults. You will notice that ratings of this book in this forum have been sabotaged by childish adults who don't review the book but Mr.Bennett's politics. Disregard their pettiness and do a child or yourself a favor and buy this book. It would be a shame to deprive a child of this book because of political bias.Notice I have signed my name unlike the would be saboteurs(1999). Almost 5 years after I first wrote this review of a truly good book I see that the saboteurs have been successful in torpedoing the ranking on this book by signing on and assigning it only 1 star then disregarding the content and ranking Bennett with 1 star for his transgressions. These areas are for book reviews not character reviews. They have only succeeded in making themselves look foolish and making my 1999 statement all the more accurate. Peruse the sample text and if you are beyond childish political pranks you will be very pleased to share this with a child ( 2004)
Rating: Summary: Why are some people afraid of these stories? Review: Anyone who has spent time observing children and their behavior, in or out of school, understands the importance of what Mr. Bennett has done in writing this book. As a jr. high teacher it is saddening to see so many young people emulating the values which our media has taught them. As a father of two small children I thought this book would be a good tool to help my wife and I teach values to our children, however it has served as a wonderful collection of important cultural reminders to use in our daily life.
Rating: Summary: Buy it for someone you love. Review: Last Christmas I bought this and Moral Compass for all my relatives. This is a gift that keeps on giving, with stories your nieces, nephews and grandchildren should hear.
Rating: Summary: Total Can't-Live-Without Book -- a Must Have Review: And it is the number one book i recommend you buy this year to read to your children and to refresh and entertain and inspire yourself. You will love it, hands down.
Rating: Summary: An instant dose of moral guidance in a fragmented world Review: I enjoyed this book's instant access to outstanding literature as a way to illustrate human virtues. The cultural span of the readings is broad. Sometimes the editor sounds preachy, but in this context it is okay.
Rating: Summary: Why don't we teach this stuff in school anymore? Review: This book is a great addition to my "bathroom literature." It has lots of good classic short stories emphasizing values that don't get enough attention in our society today. In just a few minutes, you can give your brain something subsantial to chew on for a while. It's so much better than bubblegum.
