Summary: For Graduate Studies, this is a must!
Review: The index in the back of the book, lay out of the pages, and division of chapters provides ease of use for even the beginning level writer of a term paper.
I returned to college, to obtain my Masters, after a twenty year absence. The spiral bound version of this work is an essential resource that I can not do without!
Well designed, with good ease of use.

Summary: not much of an improvement over the last edition
Review: The only major improvement that I appreciated was that the new edition is spiral-bound. This alone makes it much more user-friendly than the last edition. However, in terms of content, there were very few improvements. The change to hanging indents is just annoying--now I have to go and reformat all of my references in my new papers. There was very little added in the way of the electronic/internet references, which I understood to be a major reason for this latest revision. Further, there still little in the way of helping with how to present more advanced statistical analysis (i.e. logistic regressions, structural equation modeling) in the stats section, so this book is just as unhelpful in this regard as the last. Finally, as someone who is very familiar with APA style, I just wanted the "highlights" of what had changed, and what hadn't. Unfortunately, the style changes that had occurred from one edition to the next were never clearly delineated, so that now I have to just look everything up to see what MAY be different. Of course, I could also purchase the helper CD for an additional cost...In short, there was little improvement in this new edition, and some of the new changes are so minor that I wonder why they were made in the first place. However, given that this is THE bible for APA style, we have no choice but to go along with this new edition!

Summary: Minimal importance of computer in publication is justified.
Review: The Y2K dilemma is yet to be reconciled so later editions (beyond the 4th edition) will be within its purview after the inception of the "Millenium"... we will see. With regional power grid blackouts that will, perhaps, cascade throughout the United States, per se, connections on-line will be chaotic, but possible through satellites and independent power supplies. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association will, at its worst, become dated with regard to computers and publication and, at its best, referring to the earlier techniques for research and organization. This publication is required for courses for neophyte teachers at San Diego State University, so it can qualify for 4 stars.

Summary: Great book...BUT
Review: This book is extremely easy to use. Full of information and most of my teachers use it as a foundation for grading our papers...however, the text is written in a light font. It makes it very hard to read. I have to hold the book at an angle and keep moving several times. I even went to a book store and found the book, hoping that perhaps this book was faulty. Unfortunatly, this was not the case. Too bad, its a good product, just hard to read, especially when you're tired, you don't need to straining your eyesight to make it better to see. It's a shame. It is a terrific book, easy to follow, with plenty of do's and don'ts etc. The book is so good. I am seriously contemplating taking it to a Kwik Kopy and photocopying the entire book at a darker print to make it easier to read. The book is THAT GOOD.

Summary: Not much help for writing journal articles, and yet ...
Review: This book is very difficult to use, even for people experienced in writing journal articles and using style sheets. The index could be much better, the examples clearer.

Summary: Another Headache!
Review: This is only useful for people who have to write APA papers and manuals for school or publication. The changes from the 4th edition are minor, except for the refferences section. It seems that this edition was just released in order to get more money, because the 5th edition is virtually the same as the 3rd edition.

Summary: Not User Friendly!!!
Review: This manual was required for a course in report writing. Everything was to be written in APA style, with the aid of the manual. Sorry, the manual was so user unfriendly and time consuming to use, even the instructor gave up hope!

Summary: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
Review: We were mandated to buy this book for use when writing papers for our master's program. I have found it extremely poorly organized. Some items I can't find at all. For instance, I wanted to find out how to format an interview. Can't find it anywhere in this book. Our instructor told us to annotate our bibliographies. I cannot find anything in this book on annotated bibliographies. So far this book has been literally useless to me as a resource. It is very hard to locate any example of what your reference should look like, it is far too complex for simple college paper writing and is missing items (listed above). I haven't used it yet.

Summary: Spiral-Bound Wonder
Review: When I originally purchased the current edition, I bought it in a regular binding and immediately regretted it upon first use. This spiral bound edition allows it to lay flat so that when you are trying to confirm the style, you don't have to lay two other books on top of it to make it work. BUY THIS EDITION IF YOU HAVE TO USE APA.
