Rating: Summary: Troma f**king the house again Review: Once again Lloyd had written a book that can not be held on a level with anything in it's class. Based on his real life experance, I have read many many many film based books and this one helped in a more than funny way I would like to shake Lloyd hand and thank him for helping me. so if you ever read this THANKS LLOYD, AND IF YOUR NOT LLOYD BUY THIS GOD D**M BOOK!!!
Rating: Summary: I couldn't stop reading it!! Review: This book is more informative than Lloyd's previous one, yet it's just as entertaining. I can't have enough of Lloyd's experiences and thoughts. Also, Trent and Adam's contribution really made the book richer. I hope we get more Troma books.
Rating: Summary: A must have for the new film maker! Review: The knowledge and entertainment value of this book is hard for me to put a price on. I've bounced from film making course to film making course, from book to book, video to video and nothing has been as entertaining or helpful to my growth as a film maker as this book. Lloyd Kaufman may be irreverent at times but always brings it back to reality with cold hard facts about making movies, from casting to distribution this book delivers on every level. With asides by Trent Haaga, Doug Saakman, and with bits by Frank Reynolds who edited Tromeo and Juliet and went on to edit In the Bedroom, James Gunn writer of Scooby Doo and Trey Parker of South Park, there's plenty of tips to go round from every level of film making. I highly recomend this book to everyone and anyone even remotely thinking about making a film!
Rating: Summary: Like a velvet glove cast in malt liquor Review: I really didn't care about filmmaking until I read this book. I like Troma films a lot, and thought this would be an interesting read, seeing as how I couldn't find Lloyd Kaufman's first book anywhere in stores, as it must've sold out. Anyway, after reading this book, I definately want to make a movie now. This book doesn't go through any horsecrap theory about ambience and stuff like that. Lloyd tells it like it is. He's up front and honest about making money with your movies, dealing with actors, finding locations to shoot, etc. The best part is that it's written in PLAIN ENGLISH, and you don't want to jam forks in your eyes from the pretentiousness, which this book has none. Plus, the book has helpful hints on gore effects, and what not. This book is hilarious, and informative, and once you start reading it, you won't wanna put it down and you'll realize that your investment of $14.95 (more or less, depending on where you buy) was well spent.
Rating: Summary: A must for all independent movie makers Review: This book is inspiring and hilarious, and there are few things left in this world to which both of those adjectives apply. I am also an independent movie maker, and although my experience in the industry is very meagre compared to Lloyd Kaufman's, I can still appreciate the seam of truth running through it. If you have any desire at all to make a film, whatever it might be about, read this book first. Once you have read it, even if you don't remember what was in it, you will be much better prepared mentally for the trials and tribulations of making a movie. It goes through every aspect of film making from the initial idea to trying to sell the movie. There is so much involved and so much to say about this whole process, but Lloyd does it magnificently. The commentary and notes from his co-writers and editors are truly entertaining, and show the bizarre mix of contempt and respect that Lloyd's faithful Troma sidekicks hold for him. He has made them what they are today and driven them to despair at the same time. This book will teach you a great deal, but most importantly it shows that if you want to make a movie you need two main skills. Firstly, the drive and determination to never give up (whatever smacks you in the gut), and secondly to have a sense of humour about yourself, what you are doing and your whole life. If you can't laugh at yourself others will do it for you. My advice is to read this book and make a movie.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: What can I say about this book? It actually manages to teach you a lot about film-making without reading like an instruction manual. This is definitely one of the funniest books I have ever read. It's worth buying even if you never have and never will be interested in making a film of any kind. I have been reading it almost non-stop for the past two days, and I am almost finished. Maybe you think I should read the whole book before writing a review, but it starts out funny and maintains it, so I figured it was reasonable to write a premature review. At any rate, you should definitely read this book, it's great.
Rating: Summary: The Only Filmmaking Book Worth Reading!! Review: Every filmmaking class should have one required reading title only: "Make Your Own Damn Movie!" by Troma's Lloyd Kaufman. I learned more from this book than I ever could have from all of the filmmaking books that were thrown at me in college combined. Mr. Kaufman gives an honest, straightforward, and many times gritty introduction into the world of true independent filmmaking. The book tells it like it is, giving the reader exactly what they need to do in order to get their films made...even if what they need to do is not very pleasant...(which is more fun than pleasant methods, don't you think?) Not only is Lloyd Kaufman the smartest, most original and true independent filmmaker around, he is also absolutely hilarious. Even if you are not a filmmaker, READ THIS BOOK! It's really funny and is great for anyone who enjoys movies, especially those of Troma. And then after you read "Make Your Own Damn Movie!", read "All I Needed to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger" if you already haven't. It's also awesome!
Rating: Summary: Inspires you to make your own movie... or kill yourself. Review: If there is anyone who knows how to stretch the value of a dollar and bust out a great movie, it's Lloyd kaufman. The combination of years of film expeience and being old have taught him the importance of finding little tricks to get the most for his money. He covers just about every step of filming a 10 cent movie that there is, and does so in a way that is not only informative, but incredibly entertaining. From conception, to marketing, and everything in between, it's all here. No money for actors?- No problem! Pull someone off the street and tell them they can be in a movie. Most people will jump at the oportunity, even without pay! Exploding head?- Mellons, fill 'em with blood, throw a wig on it and smash away! This is THE book for ambitious young filmakers, who have the guts, but not the know-how. And for those young guys and gals that think they are too smart to listen to the ramblings of an old man, Trent Haaga does a wonderful job of giving a second opinion for many of the topics. Buy it, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Most impressive Review: Being both entertaining and educational, this is a huge step up in quality from other Troma products. The in-depth knowledge that Lloyd and others share in this book is must know information for any aspiring filmmaker, and it has the added bonus of making the task seem daunting, which it is. As far as film books go, I'd rate this one as the genre's second coming of Christ. Its sense of humor is superb, which makes it a fun read, a very nice thing for what is essentially a textbook.
Rating: Summary: BUY THIS BOOK! Review: This book is humorous, yet highly-informative. For wanna-be filmmakers, everything from screenwriting to how to publicize you work is talked about. For Troma fans, there are plenty of tales about what goes on behind the scenes. In fact, if you love films at all, you should buy the book! I might add, this is Troma's 30th Anniversary, everyone should get involved in the celebration!
