Rating: Summary: Over 50 Reviews and a 5-Star Average Review: How can you argue with that? If you are ever questioning making a movie and want insight on how to really do it (that is, if you don't have rich parents, rich uncles/aunts, rich grandparents who can pay your way through film school and buy you anything you want just because you can afford to call yourself an "artist") BUY THIS BOOK. Not only will it help you with your goal, it will change your outlook on the industry as a whole. This isn't just a how-to-make-a-movie book, it's a guide on how to live your life. I cannot stress enough how important this book is. You need to read it for yourself to find out.
Rating: Summary: Lloyd Kaufman is the Buddah! Review: Well actually, he's a bohdisattva. He is an enlightened being who lives among us to show us the way. After almost 20 years in the film business myself, who has had projects derailed by any number of bs details, Lloyd has written a precise roadmap on how to "get the crap made." If you're the sort who likes to sit in coffee shops theorizing endlessly about this or that, will only shoot with Arriflexes with T-stars, etc., etc, blah-blah-blah, you'll want to pass up this book and spend scads of money on film school and a subscription to Cahiers du Cinema. If you actually want to MAKE a movie, get this book and do what it says. Lloyd's writing style is... ummm... crude, but unambiguous. Lloyd goes into horrifying and hilarious detail of real, on-set situations that can strangle your film in its crib that other books gloss over or ignore, and how he busts through. And a lot of times, it ain't pretty. My only complaints with the book are that the sidebars by the coauthors are set in white type on black which makes them a bit hard to read and there are not nearly enough pictures of Tromette Alyce Latourelle. Now, go and MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE!
Rating: Summary: Let's Make Some Art!!! Review: Lloyd Kaufman is a genius. I personally was not that into Troma films in general until I read this book; I was an aspiring filmmaker looking for any advice I could get. "Make Your Own Damn Movie" not only was extremely informative and funny, but it also lit a fire under my butt to make my own art. Even if you are not a Tromaphile I would highly reccomend this book. Lloyd explains (sometimes briefly, sometimes more in-depth) every major aspect of the movie making process, from getting a script produced to how to get people to watch your movie at festivals, all without killing your self. This book has completely changed me as a person!!!! Ok, so that may be a little much, but it's is a ... good book, and anyone who is aspiring to make a film, or just wants to know how to get people naked in front of a camera for almost no $ should check it out. Thank you Lloyd for writing this gem!!!! BUY IT NOW!!! You won't be dissaponited! PS - did I mention that I was laughing out loud almost every page? It's really funny too, and even if your not into film it is a really entertaining book!
Rating: Summary: I read it and MADE my own damn movie! Review: I just finished the rough cut of my low-budget directorial debut, THE STINK OF FLESH, and it would not have been possible without Lloyd Kaufman's MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE. From what to feed cast and crew to how to deal with an actress who promised to take her shirt off and changes her mind at the last minute, Mr. Kaufman made it possible for me to make a feature-length horror movie on almost no money. Buy this book and make a cool movie. Or buy something else and be doomed to producing pretentious and boring indie crap. A damnably entertaining read even if you don't want to make movies! And Lloyd -- I'll see you at Frightvision!
Rating: Summary: Make Your Own Damn Movie Review: I loved this book. The author must be very wise and handsome;clearly he is talented.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, Shocking, packed with really useful info! Review: Though not quite as spine-snappingly funny as Kaufman's previous book "All I need to know about Filmmaking I learned from the Toxic Avenger," this has more realistic practical info, and it's a great read for Troma fans, film students, and anyone interested in making their 'own damn movie.' Whether or not the movies you want to make are of a Tromatic bent, there's a lot of great, practical production advice in here, all bracketed with some very funny stories about life at what must be the world's most idiosyncratic film company. I find I learn more really useful things from books like this and Roger Corman's "How I Made A Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime" than any of the dry, formulaic independent film books out there. A lot of these instructional books contain the same basic info but "Make Your Own Damn Movie" has a personal touch that makes it really stand out. Whether or not you're a fan of Kaufman's movies, this is definitely worth a read!
Rating: Summary: This is a great book. Review: It pisses me off when people talk about the credibility of Lloyd Kaufman as a director when writing reviews for this book. The book isn't about making a GOOD movie, it's about making A movie. And it's great. It put the whole film industry and the procedure of making a movie into perspective for me, and it made me laugh my ass off at the same time. I couldn't put this down; I read the whole thing in three days. Buy and read this if you're ever considering getting in to the film industry but have no idea where to start.
Rating: Summary: Vulgar. Disgusting. Essential. Review: You might not like seeing people get their heads crushed under car tires. You might not like avalanches of fake blood, vomit, feces, or other simulated bodily secretions. You might even fail to chuckle and nod appreciatively at a well-placed cowbell noise or echoing burst of flatulence; I admit that I'm not the world's biggest fan of any of those things. But whatever your opinion of Lloyd Kaufman's scatalogically-obsessed cinematic tropes, he deserves respect as a true auteur and a rare visionary in these troubled times of the Corporate Cinema. He also managed to find time to write an informative and entertaining book that will utterly engross (in more ways than one) any reader, from casual film buff to diehard Tromavillian. I devoured this book in large chunks, not unlike eating a tremendous, bloody steak. And like eating a tremendous slab of slightly-off red meat, reading this book brought home some hard-earned and often painful lessons. Lloyd holds no punches: he explains, in gory, vulgar, and neurotically meticulous detail, that making a movie is generally one of the most difficult, unpleasant, and universally exhausting undertakings you can initiate in peacetime. That being said, he goes on to carefully explain a thousand ways around the pitfalls of film production, from coming up with an idea to selling your finished masterpiece, all in the inimitable Troma style. I've just stayed up all night finishing this book, valuing its wisdom more than mere slumber, and while the true-life horror stories within may inspire trepidation in the faint of heart, one emerges from the reading experience with a renewed fire for filmmaking and a broader arsenal of techniques for dealing with the (excrement) that inevitably arises. By all means, if you're looking to make some cinematic art, buy a few different books on filmmaking and glean what you can from them; but before you set foot on set for the first time, before you so much as put fingers to keyboard in a mighty effort to forge the next brilliant, critically-acclaimed screenplay--buy this book and read it, cover to cover. It's intelligent. It's entertaining. And when your AD drunkenly burns down half of your set, your DP runs off with the makeup girl, and your lead actress suddenly has cold feet about her big "artistic" scene, the wit and wisdom of Lloyd Kaufman might just save your... er, career.
Rating: Summary: DAMN STRAIGHT! I'LL MAKE MY OWN DAMN MOVIE!!! Review: MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE by Lloyd Kaufman is awesome. With awesome advice, information, and facts about productions of movies they made them selves. Troma movies are awesome, they may be sick and disgusting but hey ITS A MOVIE!!! IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, get it and GET IT TODAY and get out there and LETS MAKE SOME ART!!! Go!! MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE!!!!
