Summary: Good for more than writing TV or comedy
Review: I'll confess to some chauvinism: I'm a playwright, and when I saw a book titled "Writing Television Sitcoms," I thought it would be pretty lightweight. I was wrong! This is a superb, comprehensive book that tells you exactly what to expect, and what is expected of you, at each stage of the writing and production process.But what I think makes the book stand out is Smith's detailed explanation of how to lay a foundation for writing a script, i.e., start by considering the premise, then consider sequences and scenes, and only then move to dialogue. Smith gives the best description I've ever read of the reasons for taking this approach. You can apply these ideas not only to TV comedy, but also to plays, films, and drama. It's a good explanation of how to create a story premise that "writes itself." I intend to continue writing plays, yet I'm sure I'll refer to this book at length in the future. It's much more useful than many other writing books I've read.

Summary: The Best Book I Read on the Subject
Review: If you're considering writing sitcoms and if you are serious about it you must read this book.The writer not only gives his reader a few hints on how creating characters and stories,but he also explains how this business works,what its (sometimes rude) rules are and much more and this is why it is such an interesting book ... After having read it you'll know where to start, what to do ,and where you have to go to sell it. I am writing an essay on sitcoms and this is the best book I have read on the subject.

Review: It is ambitious and there is not much that is directly wrong on this book, but it clearly lacks the depth and scope that it is being touted as having. The leading sitcom producers just offers soundbites and the practical foundation for the books teachings is weak..

Review: Smith goes right to the foundations of sitcom writing, and leads his reader through all the steps to a funny, saleable product. He explains his 'premise-driven comedy' in terms a beginner can comprehend and put to immediate use; a pro will find suggestions for boosting his batting average, and will recognize the voice of someone who's been there, and done that. Kudos to Smith

Review: This book is an excellent read whether you are a beginning writer or an old pro looking to jump start the creative juices. Professor Smith shows you the creative process from beginning to end using humor and a writing style that will keep you interested and focused. One of his former students at Newhouse, I expected a good book. But this is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in sitcom writing.

Review: This is a great book and very helpful. It really tells you what it takes and anybody from an inexperienced writer with an idea to a studio regular can benefit. I loved it. My friend has been trying to steal my copy so I'm buying another one for him.
